Asheboro Tames Trinity Bulldogs 37-6

The Trinity Bulldogs came to Lee J. Stone Stadium in hopes of challenging Asheboro but were no match for the Blue Comets as Asheboro notched another win 37-6 to move to 3-2 overall, Trinity falls to 0-5.

With summer winding down and game 5 under in the books we're almost at the halfway point in the season and it seems that the Blue Comets are starting to find their footing. The Blue Comets face North Davidson next and that will be a true test of their medal leading into conference play the following week.

Back to Friday night's game, which was Hall of Fame Night, the Comets sturck first, quickly scoring on a 1 yard run from Christian Trogden after Trinity fumbled on the second play from scrimmage in Asheboro territory. Even though Asheboro put up a total of 37 points it was a sloppy game with AHS racking up 18 penalties for 156 yards while Trinity had 5 penalties for 65 yards. Let's make it clear, Trinity was no push over as they run an effective option with quarterback Aaron Cox and running back Thomas Gorham. Gorham had 84 yards on 12 carries and helped put Trinity on the board in the beginning of the 2nd half with several nice runs.

Asheboro effectively moved the ball up and down the field with quarterback Shyheim Lineberry rushing for 94 yards on 11 carries, Christian Trogden 64 yrds on 14 carries and back-up running back Shaquelle Alsbrook for a a hurt Maurice Lewis had 42 yards on 7 carries. Lineberry completed 7 out of 13 for 82 yards connecting with Robert Bittle 3 times for 19 yards and Cam Pickle 3 times for 62 yards.

Asheboro had scores from 5 different players with Lineberry scoring once, Trogden scoring twice, Alsbrook once, and a fumble recovery and run for a touchdown by defensive player Steven Strickland, who had impressive defensive play all night long. Will O'Briant, in addition to his 4 PAT's, also kicked a 33 yard field goal. Special note about Will O'Briant, that gives Asheboro a bonus, are his kick-off's that consistently make it into the end zone thus nulifying any chance of a run back. Having said that, there was one weird moment in the game with Trinity receiving the kick, which actually didn't make it in the end zone, but bounced on about the 5 yard line and died. The Trinity return men assumed it was continuing into the end zone but it remained live of which Asheboro's Grant Cole picked it up and ran it into the end zone for what he thought was a score. The rule is you cannot advance the ball, but none-the-less Asheboro took possession of the ball on the 3 which then resulted in a score.

Final summary: Asheboro had too many weapons, personnel and overall size over an up and coming Trinity team that is working hard to get better with what they have.

Coach's Comments:
" . . . (referring to penalities) we had a lack of concentration; Trinity is really good up front, they're solid, they play hard and Coach Gibson is doing a great job with them. In stretches, we didn't match their intensity . . . we had a lot of penalties. We had a lot of good touches on offense and our defense played well tonight as they did last week"

Asheboro inducted four alumni into their Hall of Fame Friday night:
Shelby Hayden (Class of 1978)
Steve Rummage (Class of 1966)
Reitzel Smith (Class of 1932)
Crandel Coltrane (Class of 1991)

Blue Comets won but it was the Sloppiest game I've seen in awhile! Cant wait to see what happens when the conference starts. Blue Comets should be undefeated at this point. Throw some more irons in the fire cause it's getting ready to get hot!!
