On just the second play of the game, the Warrior offense drove down to the Eagle 5 yard line when Brayton Hardin broke a 48 yard run. The Eagles tightened up on defense and pulled off a goal line stand to hold Wheatmore to a 23 yard field goal by Bradley Barnette.
The Eagles answered with a score of their own that was capped off by a run by Michael Ramos. The extra point attempt was good and East Davidson led 7 to 3 with 7:30 minutes left in the 1st quarter.
Wheatmore didn’t waste any time putting 6 more points on the board when Bryan Robles found Jonathan McCoury down field for a 52 yard touchdown pass. Barnette added the extra point to give the Warriors a 10-7 advantage with 3 minutes left in the 1st quarter. The East Davidson offense put together a drive and made it to the Wheatmore 26 yard line and appeared to be on their way to the end zone again. The Eagles were forced to turn the ball over on downs after defensive backs Jason Hamby and Marvin Taylor each broke up passes in the end zone.
The Wheatmore defense fed off of the production that they were getting from the offense in the first quarter and came up with a turnover when Bryant Everhart intercepted a pass on the Wheatmore 37 yard line. The Warriors were unable to capitalize on the Bryant interception when they were stopped and turned the ball over on downs on the East Davidson 14 yard line.
Later in the 2nd quarter, the Warriors gave the Eagles the ball on the Warrior 30 yard line when the snap to the punter sailed over his head. East Davidson took advantage of the great field position and took a 13-10 lead when Josh Craven caught a 26 yard touchdown pass and fought his way into the end zone.
East Davidson’s offense was clicking on all cylinders in the second half and they took advantage of any mistakes that Wheatmore made. Quarterback Austin Wallace threw for 232 yards and a touchdown.
The Eagles leaned heavily on running back Michael Ramos tonight as he ran for 167 yards on 31 attempts and 2 touchdowns. The Eagles defense was able to slow the Wheatmore offense down with a great effort by the big guys on the defensive line. The defensive line was in the backfield stopping the run game and pressuring Robles all game long. The Warrior offense was unable to put together a scoring drive in the second half.
East Davidson defeated the Warriors 27-10. Wheatmore will travel to Southwest Randolph next Friday night, and East Davidson will be at home against Ledford.
