The 3-1 West Davidson Dragons hosted the 3-2 Tigers from Randleman in a non conference match-up in Tyro, on West's Homecoming Celebration.
The Tigers received the opening kickoff and moved the ball downfield easily on their first possession in just a handful of plays ending up with a first and goal at the six. A tough defensive stand and a couple of penalties prevented the Tigers from crossing into the end zone forced to settle for a 25 yard Allen Golsen FG to go up 3-0. The Dragons went three and done, forcing a punt. The Tigers moved downfield once again, the biggest gain on a QB Zach Dunbar 48 yard reception to WR Juval Mollette to get inside the ten. The Dragon defense and penalties once again looked like they were going to deny the Tigers but the Tigers eventually broke into the end zone on a 3 yard Chris Allen rush for TD. The Tigers went for two, a completion to Jimmy Presnell and a short run put the Tigers up 11-0. After a short kick to the Dragons, the Tiger defense held them once again to three downs forcing another Dragon punt. The Tigers moved the ball up to midfield then a 52 yard TD completion to Jacar Green, and the Golsen PAT put the Tigers up 18-0 at the end fo the quarter.
The second quarter saw a huge improvement in the Dragons game. They were able to hold the Tigers out of the end zone and was able to put up 6 on a 13 yard Austin Teague to Austin Henessee completion in the front corner of the end zone to get on the board at the end of the half. The PAT was no good. Randleman up 18-6 at the half.
Half time included the West Davidson homecoming celebration. Senior Rikki Mimikos received the title of the 2012 Homecoming Queen.
The third quarter was a continuation of the second, the Tigers couldn't move the ball as well. A combination of Dragon defensive adjustments and still being plagued with penalties, a total of 16 on the night for the Tigers... allowed the Dragons to creep closer by the end of the third on a 4 yard Kyle Smith TD run and Carson Frits PAT to pull within a touchdown at the end of the third, 18-13.
In the fourth the Tigers were finally able to break back into the end zone to add another 7 point cushion between them and the Dragons on a 5 yard Chris Allen TD run and Golsen PAT to move to 25-13. The Dragons threatened to pull a little closer on their next drive, moving the ball deep into Tiger territory but the threat was ended at a minute left in the game when the Tigers intercepted in the end zone.
What looked to be a potential blow out after one ended up being a pretty good game. Despite the outrageous amount of penalties, West made the changes they needed to make and played hard and never gave up. Congrats to both teams.
The Tigers will play their first conference game next week at home against the Bulldogs from Trinity in the Tiger Homecoming Game.
