A-TMS defeats NAMS in overtime

Archdale-Trinity and North Asheboro were both eager to rebound from tough losses the week before. NAMS was hoping to put their last minute loss to Randleman behind them, and A-TMS was looking to move past a bad loss to SERMS.

NAMS had a strong drive on their first possession. Marlin McCorey picked up 20 yards to get down to the Bulldogs’ 35 yard line. Kalil Cutrell finished off the drive with a 35 yard touchdown run to give the Comets a 6-0 advantage with 6:50 left in the 1st quarter.

The Bulldogs put together a scoring drive of their own at the beginning of the 2nd quarter. Johnny Wagner picked up 52 yards on a quarterback keeper to move the ball down to the Comet 8 yard line. Wagner then completed an 8 yard touchdown pass to Hunter Mosley on the very next play. Archdale-Trinity tied the score at 6 with 5:15 left in the 2nd quarter.

The 2nd half of the game was dominated by the defenses. Neither team reached the end zone in the next two quarters of play. Blake Reddick had an outstanding second half on defense for the Bulldogs. He made several big plays that made a difference in the game.

The game had to be settled in overtime. NAMS had the first opportunity to put points on the board, and they scored on the first play. Kalil Cutrell took the ball and ran around the right side for a score. The Comets were unable to convert the 2-point conversion.

A-TMS ran the first two plays up the middle to move down to the 5 yard line. Zach Lambeth then bounced the run out to the right side to tie the game up at 12 points each. Archdale-Trinty went with Lambeth again for the 2-point conversion, and he converted to give the Bulldogs a 14-12 victory.

Archdale-Trinity’s Head Coach Brian Leckonby attributes today’s win to sound defense and a great game by the offensive line.  Leckonby said of his offensive line, “They stepped up and controlled the ball and controlled the game.”
