If you wanted to see a high scoring game tonight & weren't at Ivey B Luck Stadium, you missed out. The Cougars & Panthers put on a display of offense.
Ledford was stopped on their first possession as well as Southwestern Randolph, but after that it was a barn burner. Ledford scored first to go up 7-0. then the Cougars made it 7-7. After forcing the Panthers to punt on their next possession, the Cougars scored again on theirs to make it 14-7. However the Panthers came back to close the gap to 14-13, but missed the extra point.
The Cougars drove down the field again on some hard running by RB Darius Martin to get the ball down to the 16 yard line. QB Ryan Sineath then ran a quarterback draw up the middle for 16 yards & the score to make it 20-13.
The extra point was bobbled & was no good. The Panthers then came right back to tie the game at 20 a piece. The Cougars drove back down the field with more hard running from Martin & finally punched it in from the 2 yard line to go up 26-20, but the extra point was blocked.
The Panthers drove down the field once more before half time to score and make it 27-26 at the half. In the first half RB Darius Martin had 18 carries for 179 yards 3 TD & moved into 2nd place all-time on the Cougar TD list. The second half was much the same as both teams seemed to score at will.
Southwestern was leading 46-40 with about 6 minutes to go & possession, but were unable to move the ball down the field. The Cougars were forced to punt and it was blocked with just under 3 minutes to go, the ball rolled in the end zone with Ledford falling on it to tie the game at 46 all.
The extra point was wide right, so the score remained 46-46 and that gave the Cougars another chance. However, Sineath was sacked on a crucial 2nd down play for 10 yards & were stopped on the next play just short of the first down marker. Runnfeldt came in to punt on 4th down again, hoping that the same result wouldn't occur as the last attempt.
It was anything but, as Runnfeldt boomed a 52 yarder pinning Ledford on the 10 yard line. The Panthers had no option but to down the ball and hope for the best in OT.
The Cougars got the ball first and scored putting them up 52-46, but the extra point was wide leaving the Cougars up by 6. The Panthers also scored on their possession and were a little bit luckier, as their extra point was good pulling out the victory 53-52.
RB Darius Martin had one of the best games of his life carrying the ball 34 times for 323 yards & an unbelievable 7 TD, not to mention a 2 point conversion, 5 catches for another 39 yards & 38 kickoff return yards for a total of 400 yards on the night.
QB Ryan Sineath had 11 carries for 38 yards 1 TD and went 6-8 passing for 52 yards. On defense LB Zach Greene had 12 tackles, a forced fumble & blocked extra point.
Dylan Garner also had 10 tackles for the Cougars. The Cougars drop to 3-5 & travel to NE Guilford next week.
