Southwestern Falls to Asheboro 29-16

It was a hard fought good game tonight between cross town rivalries, SW Randolph Cougars and the Asheboro Blue Comets on Senior night at Ivey B. Luck Stadium. The Cougars have been decimated of late by key injuries. One key injury was to starting QB Ryan Sineath and several starting defensive players. In all the Cougars had 12 players injured on the sideline.

The Comets scored first going up 7-0, but the Cougars came right back with a TD of their own and a 2 point conversion to make it 8-7. The game went back and forth, but some key penalties and turnovers gave Asheboro the momentum. The Blue Comets scored a couple more times before the half, to lead 22-8. The second half belong to the Cougars, as they drove all the way down the field to the 2 yard line of the Comets. But the Comets intercepted the ball in the flat to prevent the TD. However, the Cougars forced the Comets to punt on their possession and give it back to the Cougars. This time the Cougars went down the field and scored on a 29 yard TD by Senior RB Darius Martin and a 2 point conversion, to cut the lead to 22-16.

The Cougar defense forced the Comets to punt again. The Cougars got the ball to midfield, before another fumble gave the ball back to the Comets. The Comets quickly scored to push the lead to 29-16 and that's where it remained as the Comets held onto the win. The Cougars offensive line was led by Seniors Brody Lawrence,
Aaron Layton and Tyler Brown which help produce 283 yards on the ground. But all in all the 4 TO's and costly penalties did the Cougars in.

Another solid game by RB Darius Martin with 37 carries for 243 yards, 1 TD and a couple 2 point conversions. That moves Martin to 2968 yards rushing and 30 TD's for his career at SW Randolph. Also, FB/TE Wil Shepherd had 7 carries for 39 yard and 2 catches for 26 yards, while FB/LB Zach Greene did a great job blocking and scored the other TD for the Cougars, as well as lead the defense with 10 combined tackles. Senior LB Dylan Garner also had a good night with 8 tackles. The Cougars travel to N Forsyth for the final game of the year.

Did swr head coach write this article or something?
Fred

Yes. This article was posted by Mike Ingold of the SWR coaching staff. Thank you Mike for helping us with stats and stories concerning SWR games.

Let me say both teams played hard. In the end the talents of the Blue Comet players came through. In the future when you write an article be sure to give credit to both teams. They deserve that much. I think the final score indicates who dominated this game.

This was a good game & congrats for AHS for winning the game. This is my unbiased opinion:
Neither team is playing that well this year, that's obvious. But the Comets definitely didn't dominate the game. They allowed over 335 yards of offense, they scored once due to a botched fake punt, they intercepted a pass on the 2 yard line after the Cougars drove all the way down the field & the Cougars did in fact turn the ball over 4 times. However, there was some nice plays by the Comets, like the catch by Bittle that sealed the game. There is nothing in that story that isn't true. Did you read the Courier, it wasn't much different. Again I'll give AHS credit they played well enough to win the game & both teams fought hard. But dominate, not really.

This is my unbiased opinion. Most of the yards were gained by one peson on that team. And yes I did read the paper. And if you try fake punts then you accept what happens. And yes we did get intercepted on the 2 yard line and someone had to make a great catch on our side to stop the all mighty offence show. And in your unbiased opinion there where some good plays. Well in my opinion they where more than a few.

Is it just me or does asheboro not use Bittle as much as they should?
steve

They could use him a whole lot more down the middle and not just the down and out passes. This team has a lot of good pass catchers and if we used them all. It would help out our running game as well. But still got to love my Comets no matter what. But I guess that's what separates our fans from a lot of the others is that we usually show up and support our home town team no matter what.

Way to go Comets!! This was a great game to watch with both teams playing hard. It was nice to see the Comets come together as a team & fight hard until the very end.. That is what it's all about. I hope they practice hard & play tough next Friday! Way to go Comets!!!
