Three Teams finished tied for first place in the regular season: SERMS, Randleman, and NERMS. Randleman drew the short straw and was left out of the championship game.
You might think the Tigers would have come out flat against the Bulldogs because they expected to be in the championship game. Nothing would be further from the truth. Bailey Welch came out hot and threw two touchdown passes in the first half as the Tigers took a 12-0 lead.
The Tigers scored on their first possession with a 15 yard pass from Bailey Welch to Gunner Gantt. Randleman put 6 more points on the board when Welch completed a 45 yard pass to C.T. Robertson with 1:08 remaining in the 2nd quarter. Archdale-Trinity was stopped again by Randleman right before the half with an interception by Tanner McGee. RMS led A-TMS 12 to 0 at the half.
The Bulldogs were outplayed in the first half, but they came out with confidence to begin the 2nd half. They found the end zone on their first drive with a QB keeper by John Wagner. Hunter Mosley converted the 2-point conversion. Archdale-Trinity’s defense was much improved in the 2nd half, and they were able to slow down the Tiger offense.
Archdale-Trinity scored again at the beginning of the 4th quarter when John Wagner completed a 45 yard pass to Dalton Moncus to give the Bulldogs a 14-12 lead with 5:45 remaining in the 4th quarter.
Randleman found themselves down in the 4th quarter once again, which is nothing new to them. This is the time that the Tigers normally play their best football, and this game would not be an exception. Bailey Welch and company marched the ball down the field and took the lead on a 15 yard run by Welch. Welch also converted the 2-point conversion with a run to the right side to give Randleman a 18-14 lead with 2:13 remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs hopes of coming back and winning the game came crashing down when Welch intercepted a pass and ran it in for a Tiger touchdown with 1:03 remaining. Trent Linebury caught the pass from Welch to convert the 2-point attempt.
Randleman would hold onto that lead to defeat Archdale-Trinity 28-14. Randleman Head Coach Kevin Six commented, “This season has been magical. It has been exciting every game that we’ve played. The kids kept believing and kept fighting.”
The quarterbacks for both teams played outstanding games and battled hard against each other all night long.
Bailey Welch was the leader for the Randleman offense and he also came up with the interception that put the game away for the Tigers. Coach Six stated, “It was only fitting that Welch picked off that pass and finished it off for us.”
John Wagner played a game that was equally as impressive. He was a double threat on offense, using his legs to pick up first downs and also putting passes in the hands of his receivers. Wagner had a great game on defense pursuing the run and making stops in the backfield. He was a great leader for the Bulldogs tonight and demonstrated his desire to win.
