Asheboro escapes with win over Randleman

The Randleman Tigers stepped outside of PAC-7 play on Monday as they hosted cross-county rival the Asheboro Blue Comets. Randleman entered Monday’s game 3-10 on the season, while the Blue Comets were 5-2-3.

Asheboro took control of this one early working the ball towards the Tigers’ goal. The Comets used great passing to set Diego Valdez up for the first goal of the night. Valdez scored the goal at the 35:19 mark to give the Comets the early lead. Randleman got possession and held the ball on their end of the field for several minutes, but could put the ball into the back of the net. Asheboro sprinted up the field with twenty minutes left in the half for their second goal of the night. Ariel Rios gave the Comets a 2-0 lead on a penalty kick with 20:25 remaining in the first half of play.  The Tigers clamped down on defense and would not let the Comets score the rest of the half. The first half would not be a shutout for the Comets as Randleman scored their first goal of the night with 10:04 left. Stuart Perez scored off an assist from Yahir Lopez to cut the lead to one. At the half, Asheboro led 2-1.

The second half of play got off to a slow scoring start as the first goal of the half did not come until the 22:23 mark. Both teams moved the ball well, but both keepers stood strong in goal to keep the score 2-1 in favor of Asheboro. With twenty-two minutes left in the half, Randleman caught the Comets off guard as Perez sent the ball passed a number of Blue Comet defenders and the keeper to tie the game at 2-2. The Tigers tried to take their first lead of the night, but keeper Rhett Bolick would not let them score again. Asheboro pushed the ball up the field and finally regained the lead on a goal from Karim Salama with 14:41 left in the game. The Blue Comets stood strong on defense and pulled out a 3-2 win over the Tigers.
