Asheboro gets clean sweep

The Asheboro Blue Comets took a break from their conference schedule to face off against the Providence Grove Lady Patriots on Wednesday in volleyball.

Swinging right away was Megan Banker as she helped the Comets to an early 4-0 lead to begin the first set. Providence Grove gained their first point off of a serving error from the Comets. The Patriots rallied together and came back to tie the set at 4 apiece. Helping out the Patriots was Peyton Grettler as she tipped the ball over the net. Standing tall for the Comets were Banker and Mary Cate Kovash as they went up for the block putting Asheboro back in the lead. Back to back blocks from Banker gained the Comets a 7-4 lead. A hit from Madilyn Rhoney and a block from Madelyn Grettler put the Patriots one point away from tying the game at 7 apiece. Asheboro went on a seven point scoring spree as Briley Brewer used power behind her swing putting the Comets up 14-7. The Patriots picked up two more points before Asheboro scored again. Kendall Allen tipped the ball over the net and Adrianna Butler stood tall for the block for the Comets. M. Grettler was able to break the Comets scoring streak as she hit a kill across the net for the Patriots making it a 10-18 set. Also killing the ball over the net was Emma Saunders as she gave the Patriots 11 points. Banker gave a quick swing as she slammed the ball down and picked up a kill for the Comets. Scoring back to back for Providence Grove was Saunders as she picked up another kill along with an ace. A kill from Kovash led the Comets to an 8 point lead over the Patriots. A block from M. Grettler gave Providence Grove a total of 18 points in the first set. Asheboro went on to finish the first set with a 25-18 win.

Taking a 2-0 lead in the beginning of the second set was the Comets. Two blocks in a row from P.Grettler allowed the Patriots to take a 4-2 lead over Asheboro. Picking up two back to back aces and a tip for the Patriots was Anna Thomas as she gave Providence Grove a 7-2 advantage. Banker interrupted the Patriots scoring streak as she slammed a kill down leading the Comets to five points. Making it a 6-7 set was Kovash as she hit a kill. In the second set both teams kept a close match as they traded points back and forth. Asheboro was able to tie the game at 11 apiece. Leah Reid picked up a block and Brewer slammed a kill down to give the Comets a 14-11 lead. Due to a serving error, the Patriots picked up a free point from the Comets. Providence Grove also picked up a serving error giving the Comets a free point. The Patriots were able to work as a team and battled back to take an 18-15 lead over Asheboro. Asheboro closed the gap as they made it a two point set. Saunders picked up another kill for the Patriots to keep this in front of the Comets. M. Grettler once again jumped and gained another block making it a 22-20 set for the Patriots. Asheboro scored back to back points from the help of Reid to tie the set at 22 all. Asheboro went on to win the second set 25-23.

Providence Grove changed things up in the third set as they scored the first point. It wasn’t long before the Comets took a 2-1 lead. Providence Grove fought back as they took a 3-2 lead from the help of Rhoney who gained a kill. Banker hit a quick attack as she put the Comets back in the lead at 4-3. A serving error allowed the Patriots to tie the set at 4 a piece. Once again Banker and Kovash picked up three kills in a row making it a 7-4 set. A block from M. Grettler gave the Patriots 6 points. The Comets were able to take a 9 point lead as they made it a 15-6 set. Helping the Comets out were Butler as she had a block and kill, a kill from Chloe Smith, and a tip from Brewer. Providence Grove was able to squeeze in another point giving themselves 7 points. Asheboro added two more points to their total before Saunders slammed an attack down making it a 10-19 set. The Comets continued to push for the win as Banker picked up another attack. Providence Grove was able to score back to back points making it a 13-21. Ending the match on a kill was Kovash as she led the Comets to a 25-15 victory in the third set. Asheboro picked up a win in three sets against the Providence Grove Patriots.
