Bulldogs hold off SAMS for win

Stephanie King

The cold and wind did not stop the ATMS Bulldogs from taking on the SAMS Comets in a middle school boys’ soccer match on Wednesday afternoon.

Both teams had to warm up a bit before this one got going midway through the first half. ATMS was the first with a shot on goal, but it ended just missing the back of the net. The Bulldogs would not quit as they took the first lead of the night at 1-0 off a goal from Jagur Williams. Williams caught the SAMS keeper out of the net for the score. SAMS would not trail for long as Ramiro Avalos scored on a break away at the 8:30 mark of the first half. From there it would be a back and forth battle for the ball. ATMS would retake the lead on a goal from Gavin Garcia at the 1:11 mark. Garcia took a penalty kick and scored off the blocked kick to give the Bulldogs their 2-1 lead. The lead would hold until half as ATMS led 2-1.

The second half of play was an all-out battle as both teams pressured the ball hard. Defenses stepped up and held the other team scoreless for most of the second half. SAMS got a couple of good looks at the goal that would have tied the game, but the ATMS keeper would not let anything by him. The Bulldogs would put the finishing touches on the game with 9 seconds left as Riley Queen scored off an assist from Williams. ATMS would pick up a 3-1 win over the SAMS Comets.
