Bulldogs tops NAMS in four

Middle school softball came to ATMS on Thursday as the Lady Bulldogs hosted the NAMS Lady Comets.

NAMS started off strong as they loaded the bases early in the top of the first inning. Unfortunately, back to back outs would end the inning and leave all three runners stranded. In the bottom oft he first Avery Dykes got things started for the Bulldogs with a double to left field. Back to back singles from Gracie Hodgin and Maggie Messner put to more runners on base with Messner’s sending Dykes in for the score. Leah Mashburn drew a walk to load the bases for the Bulldogs. Taghan Safriet singled to bring in Hodgin and give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. Autumn Gentry brought in a run with a single followed by Savannah Heiney drawing a walk to bring in another run. Lilly Shoemaker brought in two runs for the Bulldogs but also gave the Bulldogs’ their first out of the inning as she left the bag early. Hannah Shoe drew a walk, followed by Dykes with a single to score Heiney. ATMS led 7-0. A home run from Hodgin brought in two runs and put the Bulldogs in front 9-0. The Lady Comets got the final out of the inning as they trailed 9-0.

ATMS opened the top of the second with a strikeout before giving up a walk to Meghan Prochnau. Messner struck out the next two batters to leave Prochnau stranded on base. The Lady Comets had a strong defensive showing in the bottom of the second inning as they held the Bulldogs scoreless. NAMS got an out right away before giving up back to back singles to Gentry and Lindsey Hart. Gentry would be thrown out at second as Ada Benitez fielded the ball and made the throw to Celeste Guttierez at second. Shoemaker picked up another hit but was thrown out at first as catcher Alexa Cambion made the throw to Prochnau at first. After two innings, the Bulldogs continued to lead 9-0.

Messner had a strong inning for the Bulldogs in the circle during the top of the third as she struck out the first three batters to end the inning quickly. In the bottom of the third, Karleigh Hunt led things off with a single for the Bulldogs. Dykes singled once more, but Hunt was out on her way to second as Benitez made the throw to Guttierez at second. Hodgin picked up another home run to add two more runs to the Bulldogs’ total. Messner singled followed by Mashburn who had her hit caught by Shakty Oliver for out number two. A single from Safriet put runners on the corners for the Bulldogs as Gentry stepped to the plate. She doubled to bring in Messner and Safriet. Hunt picked up a hit and reached second on a bad throw allowing Gentry time to score. Shoemaker singled to put runners on the corners, but both would be left stranded as the Lady Comets got the final out of the inning. After three innings, ATMS led 14-0.

The Bulldogs had another strong showing in the top of the fourth inning as they forced the Comets to go three up, three down. Messner once again struck out all three batters. Dykes led things off with a single for the Bulldogs in the bottom of the inning. Hodgin reached on a dead ball and Dykes eventually made her way home to give the Bulldogs a 15-0 win over the Comets.
