Comets get revenge against Cougars

With just three days rest, the Asheboro Blue Comets and the Southwestern Randolph varsity boys’ soccer teams were back it on Monday. This time the teams faced off on the Blue Comets home field with the Cougars looking for the season sweep and the Comets looking for revenge. Asheboro entered the game 8-1 in conference play and 16-1 overall on the season, while Southwestern Randolph was 8-0 in conference play and 15-0 overall on the season.

Southwestern Randolph got first touch on the ball to start the game and quickly began to push the ball toward the goal. Asheboro’s defense was strong and kept the Cougars from scoring. The game went back and forth during the early part of the half, but the Cougars soon took control. Southwestern Randolph kept the ball on their side of the field for a few minutes, but could not score. Midway through the half, Southwestern Randolph’s Alex Mercado was given a free kick and put the shot on goal, but it was saved by Asheboro’s keeper, John Cernava. As the half began to wind down, Asheboro stepped up their offense and took control of the ball. The Blue Comets set up a couple of plays that lead to good looks at the goal, but Jose Tinoco was there for the save for the Cougars. At halftime, the score would remain tied 0-0.

The second half of play started much like the first with the teams going back and forth across the field. Both teams took shots on goal early, but could not get the ball by the keepers. Asheboro eventually found a way through the Cougars defense and scored. The Blue Comets would take a 2-0 lead and hold the Cougars scoreless. Southwestern Randolph tried to get on the board and tie the game, but the Blue Comets’ defense was just too strong. Omar Aboutaleb and Branson Adams each scored as the Blue Comets defeated the Cougars 2-0. Jose Garcia and Scott Villagrana each dished out an assist in the win.
