Cougars hold off Bulldogs

Stephanie King

Baseball season is finally here as the Southwestern Randolph Cougars hosted the Trinity Bulldogs Friday night in non-conference play.

Both teams put runners on the bases in the first inning, but neither could find away to bring them across the plate. Trinity left runners stranded on the corners, while Southwestern Randolph left the bases loaded. The Bulldogs put Connor Stanley and Tyler Bova on first and second in the second inning, but the Cougars Parker LaPlant struck out back to back batters for the final two outs of the inning.

Johnathan Owens reached first after getting hit by a pitch to start the bottom of the second, but the Bulldogs would answer with the first out of the inning. Mikey Miller singled to give the Cougars another base runner before Trinity picked up out number two. Owens and Miller would both score to put the Cougars on the board and break the 0-0 tie. Trinity picked up the final out of the inning as they trailed 2-0 after two innings.

Trinity would put a run on the board in the top of the third as Cole McCrary used smart base running to cross home plate. The Bulldogs would leave a runner stranded at the end of the inning. Southwestern Randolph loaded the bases with their first three batters and a hit from Miller brought Luke Johnson in for the score. Owens and Blake Marsh would score off a dead ball to give the Cougars a 5-1 lead over the Bulldogs. Trinity picked up the final two outs of the inning.

Neither team would be able to score during the final four innings. Trinity threatened in the top of the seventh as they had two runners in scoring position before the Cougars nabbed the final out of the inning to end the game. Southwestern Randolph held on to top Trinity 5-1.
