Cougars sweep Comets on senior night

It was senior night at Southwestern Randolph as the Lady Cougars’ volleyball team hosted the Asheboro Blue Comets in Mid-Piedmont Conference action. The Cougars came into the game 8-2 in conference play and 18-4 overall on the season, while the Blue Comets came in at 10-1 and 16-3. Before the match Southwestern Randolph honored seniors Linley Johnson, Hannah Hutchins, Faith Latham, Taylor Mabe, Savannah Auman, Faith Lemmons, Autumn Springer, Kendra Davis, and Alayna Woodard.

Asheboro took an early 5-0 lead at the start of the first set, but the Cougars ended the run with their first point of the night. Southwestern Randolph cut the lead to three before the Blue Comets took another five point lead. Asheboro remained in control during the early moments of the set, but Southwestern Randolph would battle back to tie the set at 14 all. The tying point came when the Blue Comets tipped the ball out of bounds. The Blue Comets would retake the lead, but not for long as the Cougars tied the set at 17-17, 18-18, and 19-19. Southwestern Randolph would take their first lead of the night with a 4-0 run for a 22-19 lead. Asheboro tied the set at 22 all before taking a 24-22 lead. The Cougars used another 4-0 run to take the set 26-24.

The Blue Comets once again took the first point in the second set and eventually built a 6-1 lead over the Cougars. Southwestern Randolph cut the lead one at 5-6, but some miscommunication ended their run. Asheboro continued to pull ahead and a kill by Megan Banker would put the Blue Comets in from 19-11. They took a 20-11 lead before a serving error gave the Cougars control of the ball. Down by eight, the Cougars rallied to tie the set at 20 all behind the serves from senior Faith Latham. Kendra Davis picked up a kill during the 9-0 run by the Cougars.

The Blue Comets regained the lead, but only for a moment as the Cougars tied the set a 21 all and then took a 22-21 lead. Asheboro would tie the set at 22 all after a serving error by the Cougars. The two teams would trade a couple points until Asheboro led 24-23. Another kill from Davis tied the set at 24 all for the Cougars. Southwestern Randolph picked up back to back points for a 26-24 set two win. The final point of the night for the Cougars came when the Blue Comets returned the ball out of bounds.

Southwestern Randolph took control of the third set early on and never trailed. They took a 2-0 lead before the Blue Comets scored their first point of the set. The Cougars continued to build upon their lead until they led 5-1. Their lead would hold just a few moments longer as the Blue Comets came back to tie the set at 6 all. From there, the Cougars would explode for a 15-8 lead over the Comets midway through the set. Asheboro would cut the lead to two at 15-17, but could never get any closer. Southwestern Randolph outscored the Blue Comets 8-3 the rest of the way for a 25-18 set win. The Cougars took the match 3 sets to 0.

Senior Kendra Davis led the way for the Cougars with 10 kills, 7 digs, and 2 aces, while Cassidy Schiebel finished with 6 kills. Senior Alayna Woodard recorded 5 kills and 7 digs, while senior Faith Latham began a serving run in the second set when the Cougars were down 20-13, serving 12 balls with 3 aces to help get the win. Kesley Nance and Sammi Underwood each dished 11 assists for the Comets, while Megan Banker added 9 kills, 3 blocks, and 3 aces. Briley Brewer finished with 6 kills for Asheboro and Kendall Allen chipped in 2 kills and 11 digs.
