Craven has strong game to lead Wildcats over Bulldogs

It was a chilly night as the Bulldogs of Trinity took the field against the visiting Eastern Randolph Wildcats on Tuesday. This was the first conference game of the season for the Bulldogs who entered the game 2-3 on the season. Eastern Randolph was playing in their third PAC-7 game of the season after splitting the first two with Providence Grove for a 1-1 record. The Wildcats were also 1-3 overall on the season.

It would be a quick top of the first for the Wildcats as they Bulldogs forced them to go in order including a pair of strikeouts from Chase Wade. Eastern Randolph opened the bottom of the first with two quick outs before giving up a walk to Cameron Moser. Moser’s courtesy runner Ben Owens would be left stranded as Connor Stanley had his hit caught for out number three. After one complete inning, this one was still tied at zero.

The Wildcats got a pair of runners on base to start the second inning as Eric Cheek drew a walk followed by Nyk Foland who was hit by a pitch. Jayden Shepard picked up a hit to reach first, but Cheek was throw out at third for the first out of the inning. Wade struck out Slater Jones for out number two before Nate Canter had his hit caught for out number three. Colton Craven found his grove in the bottom of the second as he struck out Landon Mosley and Ethan Stepp on back to back at bats. Kenyon Crotts drew a walk before stealing second to give the Bulldogs a runner in scoring position. Crotts was left stranded as Craven struck out Graham Bryant for the final out of the inning. The game was still tied 0-0 after two innings.

Trinity got a quick out to start the top of the third before giving up the first hit of the night to Christian Moon. Cade Snotherly reached first on an error while Moon was thrown out at second for out number two. Snotherly proceeded to steal second and third to give the Wildcats a runner in scoring position. Mason Canoy would strikeout for the final out of the inning. It would be a quick bottom of the third as Craven struck out three straight batters to end the inning with the score still tied at 0-0.

Both teams continued to struggle getting points on the board as the Bulldogs picked up two quick outs to begin the top of the fourth inning. Shepard drew a walk but would be left stranded after Jones had his hit caught for out number three.  Craven got a quick strikeout to begin the bottom of the fourth before giving up a single to Stanley. Mosley laid down the bunt to advance the runner before being thrown out at first for out number two. A walk from Stepp put a pair of runners on base for the Bulldogs before the Wildcats got the final out of the inning. After four complete innings, the game was still tied at 0-0.

Eastern Randolph finally found a groove in the top of the fifth as they scored four runs before their first out of the inning. Canter singled to left field before Michael Glasgow reached second on an error to put a pair of runners in scoring position for the Wildcats. Moon stepped to the plate and singled to score Canter to break the 0-0 tie. Snotherly laid down a bunt and after a pair of errors by the Bulldogs, Glasgow’s courtesy runner Curtis Williams, Moon, and Snotherly were each able to score.

Trinity picked up the first out of the inning before giving up a walk to Cheek. He would be caught trying to steal second for out number two. A single from Foland and an automatic walk for Shepard (who was hit by a pitch) gave the Wildcats two more base runners. Crotts would come in for Wade on the mound and strike out Jones for the final out of the inning. Craven continued to throw the ball well striking out the first two batters of the bottom of the inning before giving up a walk to Noah Brown. Wade had his hit caught for out number three. After five complete innings, Eastern Randolph led Trinity 4-0.

The Bulldogs got a quick out to start the top of the sixth before hitting Glasgow with a pitch for the automatic walk. Moon drew a walk to put runners on first and second before Williams (Glasgow’s courtesy runner) scored after Snotherly’s at-bat. Moon would be thrown out at second for out number two. Snotherly reached second before stealing third to give the Wildcats a base runner in scoring position. Unfortunately, Snotherly was left stranded as Canoy struck out for the final out. Trinity tried to answer in the bottom of the inning as Moser picked up a single. His courtesy runner, Owens, reached second on a hit by Stanley that saw Stanley thrown out at first for the first out of the inning. Mosley had his hit caught for out number two. Stepp drew a walk to put runners on the corners for the Bulldogs. Both runners were left stranded as Crotts struck out for out number three. After six complete, Eastern Randolph led 5-0.

It was a quick seventh inning as both teams were forced to go three up, three down. After breaking open the game in the fifth, Eastern Randolph held on to win 5-0 over Trinity. Colton Craven got the pitching win for the Wildcats after giving up two hits, five walks, and striking out 10 in six innings of work. Mason Canoy struck out two in one inning for the Wildcats. Christian Moon finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Wildcats with one run scored and one run batted in. Cade Snotherly finished with two stolen bases.
