Eastern Randolph down 0-1

After a couple of schedule changes due to weather, the Eastern Randolph Lady Wildcats finally got their chance to play in the semifinals of the 2A state softball Tournament on Friday. The Lady Cats faced off against the top seeded South Granville Vikings in the first game of the best of three series.

South Granville opened with a bunt from Emma Jones and had their first base runner of the night. Eastern Randolph started strong as they turned a double play in the top of the first. The Wildcats would get out of the inning moments later on a ground out. The Vikings started the bottom of the first with an out, but ended up hitting Haley Kearns with a pitch. Kearns was moved into scoring position on a hit from Kelsey Craven just before the Vikings picked up out number two. Tori Maness drew a walk to load the bases for the Lady Wildcats, but she was left stranded as the Vikings got the final out of the inning.Eastern Randolph gave up a single to started the top of the second and then picked up the first out of the inning. Brianne Coleman singled for the Vikings, but it was no use as the Wildcats turned another double play to get out of the inning. In the bottom of the inning, Marion Goins opened with a single for the Wildcats. South Granville turned a double play on the next batter’s hit and then struck out the following batter for out umber three. After two innings, this one was still tied at 0.

In the top of the third, Jordan Talley and Jones both singled for South Granville to put runners in scoring position. Eastern Randolph left them stranded as the Wildcats picked up three straight outs. Aniyah King began the bottom of the third for the Wildcats with a double putting herself into scoring position. As soon as the Vikings got the first out, Craven stepeds to the plate hitting an RBI double to send King home making this a 1-0 game. South Granville got out of the inning with back to back strike outs.

Eastern Randolph started the top of the fourth with a walk to Colclough and a single to Falynn Neighbors. Due to smart base running, Colclough stole home putting the Vikings on the board. Coleman drew a walk followed by Grace Calus taking a pitch to arm. South Granville took their first lead of the night on an RBI single from from Talley. Eastern Randolph got the first out of the inning, but the Vikings continued to make contact with the ball and loaded the bases. South Granville scored five more runs before the Wildcats picked up out number two. The Vikings tacked on one more run before the Wildcats got the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the fourth, Shyanne Gay started things out for the Wildcats with a double, but was left stranded as the Viking got three outs in a row. After four complete, Eastern Randolph trailed 8-1.

The Lady Vikings picked up a single from Talley to start the top of the fifth. Behind her was Jones as she hit a triple sending Talley towards home. Talley was thrown out at home to get the first out of the inning for the Wildcats. Jones tagged up as she scored at home as the Wildcats got the second out of the inning. At the end of the top of the fifth the Vikings were up 9-1. South Granville forced the Wildcats into a quick one, two, three inning in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the Wildcats gave up back to back base hits, but left them stranded as they got three outs in a row. Tori Maness was the only Wildcat to get on base in the bottom of the sixth as she drew a walk. After six innings, the  Vikings continued to lead 9-1. In the top of the seventh, Eastern Randolph gave a walk and a single before picking up three straight outs. South Granville forced the Wildcats to go three up three down in the bottom of the seventh to end the game. Eastern Randolph fell 9-1 and drop to 0-1 in the best of three series.

Game two of the series will be today at South Granville at 11AM. If needed, game three will be played today at 6PM at South Granville.
