Eastern Randolph tops PG

Friday night the Eastern Randolph Lady Wildcats hosted the Providence Grove Lady Patriots for a PAC-7 matchup in varsity softball.

The Wildcats led things off in the top of the first with a strikeout. Making contact with the ball was Maddy Hunt as she picked up a base hit. With two outs, Sam Welch stepped to the plate and picked up a base hit to add a second base runner for the Patriots. Tatum Smith sent the ball into the outfield for an RBI single to put the Patriots on the board early. Eastern Randolph picked up the final two outs to end the inning. In the bottom of the first, the Patriots got their first out with a strikeout. Aniyah King found her way on base with a solo hit before Brooklyn Rush slammed an RBI single into left field to send King home. Providence Grove got out of the inning leaving one runner stranded. After one complete inning, the game was tied 1-1.

Leading things off in the top of the second was Logan Cockman with a solo hit. Eastern Randolph turned a double play to clear the bases. Savannah Beaver began the bottom of the second with a base hit. Providence Grove threw the lead runner out as Gerrilyn Milligan reached first. Halie Abrams made contact for an RBI as it sent Milligan home. After two innings, the Wildcats led 2-1.

Alli Young started things off in the top of the third with a solo hit but the Wildcats answered by picking up back to back outs. Makenna Sibbett singled for the Patriots before Eastern Randolph left two runners on base as they got the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the third, the Patriots allowed only one hit to Kelsey Craven as she doubled for the Wildcats. Providence Grove ended the bottom of the third with a strikeout. After three innings, ER continued to lead 2-1.

With one out in the top of the fourth, Makayla McClain picked up a base hit before Cockman drew a walk. Loading the bases with a base hit was Carson Williams. Unfortunately for the Patriots, Eastern Randolph held all three runners on base as they got back to back outs. Providence Grove forced the Wildcats into a quick one, two, three inning in the bottom of the fourth. After four complete innings, the Wildcats led 2-1.

Eastern Randolph began the top of the fifth with two outs in a row before giving up a base hit to Welch. The Wildcats left Welch on base as they ended the inning. In the bottom of the fifth Abrams took one for the team as she was hit with a pitch before the Patriots picked up three outs in a row.

The Wildcats led off the top of the sixth by forcing the Patriots to go three and out. Rush began the top of the sixth with a single hit. With one out Beaver stepped to the plate for an RBI double into right field to bring in Rush for the score. Providence Grove picked up two outs before an error allowed Makayla Pugh to pick up a base hit. Abrams came to the plate for an RBI single. Carter took ball four as she was walked before Pugh scored on an RBI walk from King. Up next was Craven as she slammed an RBI double into left field to clear the bases and allow three runs to score. Eastern Randolph took an 8-1 lead. The Patriots finished the inning with a pop up out. After six innings, ER led 8-1.

Eastern Randolph was able to hold the Patriots in the top of the seventh as they forced them into a three up, three down inning in the top of the seventh.

Abrams, Beaver, Craven, and Rush led the Wildcats at the plate with two hits each. Beaver earned the pitching win for the Wildcats after giving up one run on eight hits, one walk, and striking out eight in seven innings.

For the Patriots, Welch finished 2-for-3 at the plate.
