Game of the Week: Asheboro vs Eastern Randolph

With a few games under their belts, teams are gearing for the final weeks of non-conference play and looking towards the conference season. Several teams have opened the season with some incredible wins, while other have fallen just short. The teams duking it out in this week’s “Game of the Week” are searching for momentum before they head into conference play. This week’s “Game of the Week” will feature the Asheboro Blue Comets and the Eastern Randolph Wildcats.

The Blue Comets will host the Wildcats on Friday in what should be an exciting match-up. These two teams have a storied history and since 2004 they have split the series at 7 games apiece. The last time the two teams met, Asheboro pulled out a 24-8 win over Eastern Randolph. The Wildcats have not beaten the Blue Comets since 2011 when they earned a 14-7 win.

Asheboro comes into Friday’s game 0-3 on the season after a couple of close games. Under new head coach Kevin Gillespie, the Blue Comets are looking to turn their season around with a win over the Wildcats. Nate Fisher has been one of the go-to guys this season for the Blue Comets and he could give the Wildcats a lot of trouble on Friday. Quarterback Corey Durrant has shown glimpses of the player he can be in the first few games of the season. He has made several key plays for Asheboro and he will need to make them on Friday if the Blue Comets expect to win. Getting Cam Glover, who was out last week with an injury, back would be big for the Blue Comets. Senior Alec Shoenberger has been key for the Blue Comets the past few seasons and nothing has change. He can be a threat for the Blue Comets on both sides of the ball.

Currently, the Wildcats are 1-2 on the season, having picked up their first win on Monday against Albemarle. Quarterback Kody Wilder has played well in the Wildcats’ first games of the season and is averaging 171 passing yards per game in there first two games. Tyrese Cassidy has been a favorite target of Wilder’s this season and things should be no different in the Wildcats game against Asheboro. Tavis McAdoo has been a contributor for the Wildcats on the offense side of the ball, rushing for 111 yards in their first two games. Defensively, Taiwan Gabriel and Tyrese Watson will need to have a big game against the Blue Comets should the Wildcats expect to win.

Both teams will need to limit their turnovers if they want to walk away victorious on Friday. Eastern Randolph will need to contain the fast-moving Nate Fisher and keep the ball out of his hands. Asheboro’s defense will need to attack quarterback Kody Wilder and force him out of the pocket. Can the Wildcats end their current loosing skid against the Blue Comets or will Asheboro extend their winning streak? Who knows, but will find out on Friday!
