Huskies advance to finals

The middle school baseball tournament semifinals were held on Thursday evening as the NERMS Huskies battled it out against the RMS Tigers in the second semifinal. The Huskies defeated UMS to advance to the semifinals, while the Tigers went through SAMS for a spot in the semifinals.

RMS opened the first inning with back to back hits from Bryson Sweatt and Owen Strickland to put runners on second and third. Sweatt was out at home off a single from Cody Kivett. With runners on the corners, J. Akines brought in Strickland for the score. Akines was picked off at first. Austin Kivett struck out to end the inning for the Tigers. NERMS went to work in the bottom of the first, bringing two runs across the plate. Luke Thomas scored the tying run off a triple from Chris Sams. The Tigers picked up back to back outs as Austin Rickard singled to score Sams. Dustin Stephens would be out at first for out number three. After one inning, the NERMS Huskies led 2-1.

The Huskies ended the top of the second quickly as they turned a double play to pick the lead runner and the batter. In the bottom of the second, the Huskies brought five more runs across the plate to take a 5-1 lead. Lead off, Aaron Barrett, scored the first run of the inning with one out on the board. Sams singled to score the second run of the inning. Thomas scored his second run of the night on a wild pitch to put the Huskies ahead 5-1. NERMS would load the bases, but all three runners were left stranded as the Tigers got the final out of the inning.

In the top of the third, the Tigers closed the gap scoring two runs. After out number one, Sweatt singled to center and would score off a stand-up triple from Strickland. Cody Kivett’s hit was caught for out two, but Strickland made his way home, cutting the lead to two. NERMS would end the inning with a strikeout. RMS forced the Huskies to go three up, three down in the bottom of the inning. After three complete, the Huskies led 5-3.

Both teams would go scoreless in the fourth as RMS forced NERMS into another three up, three down inning in the bottom of the fourth. NERMS would return the favor in the top of the fifth as they forced the Tigers to go three and out. The Huskies opened the bottom of the fifth with a triple from Zander Smith and a single from Rickard put runners on the corners. RMS picked up back to back outs with two runners still on base. The Huskies loaded the bases after Noah Howell drew a walk. Collin Adams scored off a single as the bases remained loaded. A single from Thomas scored Barrett and Howell to put NERMS in front 8-3. Dalon Arrington singled to score the final run of the inning. With five innings complete, the Huskies were in control 9-3.

It was a quick top of the sixth for the Tigers as they left a runner stranded on third. NERMS would also have a quick sixth inning as they too left a runner stranded. The Huskies turned another double play in the top of the seventh for the final two outs of the game. NERMS got the 9-3 win and advances to the finals against the SWRMS Cougars.
