Huskies, Bulldogs split doubleheader

Middle school volleyball action made its way to NERMS on Tuesday as they Lady Huskies hosted the ATMS Lady Bulldogs. NERMS entered the game 5-5 on the season, while ATMS was 8-2.

Match 1

ATMS opened the first set of the night with the first point before the Lady Huskies tied the set at one all. NERMS took a 3-1 lead off a tip from Paige Needham, but handed the Bulldogs a free point with a serving error on the next serve. The Huskies scored three straight points for a 6-2 lead before the Bulldogs trimmed the lead to one with a three-point run of their own. NERMS built a 10-5 lead off a kill from Needham to remain in the control. The Bulldogs rallied, scoring seven unanswered to take a 12-10 lead. NERMS quickly cut the lead to one, but a 4-0 run by ATMS extended the lead. After a tip from Asiah Shoffner cut the lead to for the Huskies, ATMS used a 9-2 run to close out the set. Maddie Burgiss served an ace and Taylor Richardson picked up a kill during the Bulldogs’ run. ATMS won the first set 25-14.

The second set of play was a hard-fought battle from the start as the score remained close throughout the set. ATMS once again took the first point of the set, but Huskies soon tied it at one all. A tip and hit from Needham gave the Huskies a 4-2 lead. After trailing 5-4, the Lady Bulldogs responded with a 4-0 run for an 8-5 lead. A hit from Emma Mazzarone cut the lead to two for the Huskies to kickstart a small run to help the Huskies tie the game at eight all. A serving error on the Huskies gave the lead back to the Bulldogs and they used it to build a 12-8 lead. Burgiss picked up a hit to give the Bulldogs the 12-8 lead. Points went back and forth for the next few minutes before the Huskies tied the game at 14 all. A kill from Brecken Snotherly tied the game at 16 all for the Huskies, but it would be the Bulldogs who broke the tie. ATMS scored eight straight for a 24-16 lead. Emma Monroe served an ace during ATMS’ run. When the game looked to be one point away from being over the Lady Huskies rallied to steal the win. NERMS scored ten straight behind a strong serve from Mazzarone to claim a 26-24 set win.

Allie Frazier opened the third set with the first point for the Huskies. ATMS quickly tied the set at one all before another hit from Frazier put the Huskies back in front. A serving error on the Huskies allowed the Bulldogs to tie the game. The teams stayed within a point of each other until the set was tied at five all. NERMS broke the tie with an 8-0 run behind another strong serving sequence from Mazzarone. The Lady Bulldogs would not go away quietly as they cut the lead to one with an 8-1 run behind a strong serving sequence from Richardson. A return hit by the Bulldogs sailed out of bounds giving the Huskies the final point of the set. NERMS took the set 15-13 to win the match two sets to one.

Match 2

It would be all NERMS to start the first set of the second match as they built a 6-2 lead to begin the set. A pair of aces from Kynnedi Routh cut the lead to two for the Bulldogs before they tied the set at six all. Routh picked up another ace to put the Bulldogs in front 7-6, but a serving error by the Bulldogs allowed NERMS to tie the game at 7 all. The teams traded points the next few minutes until the Bulldogs began to pull away. ATMS led 16-14 before tacking on three more points for a 19-15 lead. NERMS got as close as two the rest of the way but could not overcome the Bulldogs lead. ATMS closed out the set with a 5-0 run for a 25-18 win.

NERMS opened the second set with an early 2-1 lead but the Bulldogs would soon claim the lead and never let go. ATMS tied the game at two-all before using a 7-1 run to take a 9-3 lead over the Huskies. NERMS cut the lead to two four with a couple of points early in the set. The Lady Bulldogs continued building on their lead with a 10-2 run for a 19-7 lead midway through the set. NERMS scored back to back points before a serving error gave the Bulldogs a free point. ATMS closed out the set with a 7-6 run for a 25-16 set win. The Lady Bulldogs took the second match two sets to none.
