Stephanie King

It was a battle of the unbeaten on Wednesday as the ATMS Bulldogs took on the NERMS Huskies. Both teams entered Wednesday’s game 3-0 on the season and were the only undefeated teams left in the county.

NERMS received the ball to start the game. The first play of the game saw Chase Whitaker complete a pass to Zander Cheek for a big gain, but the ball would be brought back after a flag. Whitaker and Cheek connected again for a small gain before Cheek ran for a first down on fourth down. With five minutes left in the first quarter, ATMS’ Brandon Campbell picked off a pass from Whitaker. Daniel Torreblanca picked up a first down for the Bulldogs on their first play of the game.  NERMS’ defense clamped down after that and forced the Bulldogs to punt on fourth down. NERMS took over and picked up three straight first downs on runs from Zane Cheek and Zander Cheek. The first quarter would end with the score still tied at zero.

It did not take long for the Huskies to find the end zone as Zander Cheek scored just eleven seconds into the second quarter. Zander Cheek completed the two-point conversion to put the Huskies in front 8-0. On the ensuing kickoff, the Huskies went to the onside kick and were able to recover their own kick for another offensive possession. It took just a couple plays before Zander Cheek ran 30-yards into the end zone for another NERMS touchdown at the 5:56 mark. Zander would also complete the two-point conversion to give the Huskies a 16 point lead. ATMS took over after the kickoff, but struggle to get something going. Dominic Payne connected with Campbell for a first down, but could not find the end zone. When the Huskies took over they tacked on one more touchdown before the end of the half. At halftime, NERMS led the Bulldogs 22-0.

The Huskies continued their defensive dominance in the second half as they continued to hold the Bulldogs scoreless. NERMS added another touchdown in the third quarter when Zander Cheek picked up a rushing touchdown. The Huskies’ defense would handle the rest of the game as NERMS went on to win 28-0.
