Lady Bulldogs claim MS soccer title

The middle school girls’ soccer season concluded on Friday as the ATMS Lady Bulldogs faced off against the SAMS Lady Comets in the tournament championship game. ATMS defeated Uwharrie Ridge and NERMS to advance to the finals, while SAMS took down NAMS and SWRMS.

The Lady Bulldogs took the first touch on the ball and quickly moved the ball to their side of the field. ATMS’ kept the ball on their side of the field for most of the half, but SAMS caught a couple of breaks and got the ball on their side of the field. Tess Moody had a strong run early and had a great look at the goal, but the shot was saved by Samantha Heglar. Midway through the first half, Haley Vazquez found an opening and put one in the back of the net for the Bulldogs first goal of the afternoon. SAMS turned up their defense and held the Bulldogs scoreless for the next few minutes. The Comets tried to tie the game, but the Bulldogs’ defense was just too much. ATMS capped off the half with a goal with just 25.7 seconds left. Ellie Garrison used her head to score off a perfectly placed ball from Izabella Ringley. At the half, ATMS led 2-0.

ATMS wasted no time adding to their lead as Rilan White scored just over a minute into the second half. The Bulldogs turned up their aggression and put the pressure on the Comets. SAMS made several runs at the goal during the half, but Hegler was there to make the save every time. The Bulldogs maintained their strong play and quickly took a 4-0 lead off a goal from Garrison at the 21:47 mark. ATMS was not done there as Garrison found Vazquez for a goal with 11:33 left to put the Bulldogs in front 5-0. The Bulldogs’ defense continued to hold the Comets scoreless until time expired. ATMS got the win 5-0 over SAMS to win the middle school girls’ soccer tournament.
