Lady Bulldogs top Patriots for PAC-7 win

It was a PAC-7 varsity basketball match-up on Friday at Trinity High School as the Lady Bulldogs hosted the Providence Grove Lady Patriots. Trinity entered Friday’s game 0-1 in conference play and 4-5 on the season, while the Lady Patriots were 1-0 in conference play and 4-3 overall.

Providence Grove found themselves on top early as Gabby Griffin scored in the post for a 2-0 lead. Emma Saunders scored down low off an assist from Anna Thomas to put the Patriots’ lead to 4-0. Bre Brown sparked a 10-0 Trinity run with her first bucket of the night. Her and Jade Earnhardt would score all ten points for the Bulldogs as they took a 10-4 lead. Avery Browder scored off an inbounds pass to cut the lead to 10-6 by the end of the quarter.

Brown continued to find her shot as she drained a three from the right corner early in the second quarter to push Trinity’s lead to 13-6. Kaitlin Sexton cut the lead to five with a deep two, but a rebound and put back for Lexie Hinson extended the lead back to seven for the Bulldogs. Browder worked in the paint to pick up her second bucket of the night and cut the lead down to five for the Patriots. A trip to the free throw line for Brown resulted in two more points for the Bulldogs as they led 17-10 with about five minutes remaining in the half. Earnhardt laid one in and Brown made a return trip to the charity stripe to give the Bulldogs a 21-10 lead over the Patriots. Madison Dark knocked down one of two free throws late in the quarter for her first point of the night. At the half, Trinity led Providence Grove 21-11.

Hinson made a trip to the free throw line at the start of the third quarter to push the Bulldog’s lead to twelve. Browder continued to have success in the post for Providence Grove as she scored once more to cut the lead back to ten. A three from the right corner by Sexton closed the gap to seven for the Patriots. Trinity would answer with a 5-0 run to extend their lead to 29-16. Providence Grove would cut the lead back to ten, but a free throws and strong drive to the basket by Brown just pushed the lead further out. The Patriots closed out the third quarter with a 5-0 run to trail by nine at the end of the quarter. Trinity led 33-24.

It was a low scoring quarter for both teams in the fourth. A few minutes into the quarter Browder scored in the paint once again for the Patriots to cut the lead to seven. Brown worked hard on the other end drawing a foul on the Patriots. She would knock down both free throws to push the lead to 35-26 for the Bulldogs. With just over two minutes remaining in the game, Brown would find an opening to the basket and score for the Bulldogs to give them a 37-26 lead. Providence Grove had no choice, but to foul as the Bulldogs tried to run out the clock. The Patriots sent Caitlyn Swiggett and Earnhardt to the line and the pair made three of four free throws. Dark cut the lead to twelve for the Patriots, but the Bulldogs would go on to win 41-28 after a free throw from Swiggett.

Bre Brown paced the Bulldogs with 24 points, while Jade Earnhardt finished with 8. Lexie Hinson chipped in 6 for Trinity. Top scorers for the Patriots were Avery Browder with 10, Madison Dark with 8, and Kaitlin Sexton with 5.
