Lady Cats edge out Bulldogs for PAC-7 win

Ladies Pac-7 Conference basketball came to Eastern Randolph High School on Friday night as the Wildcats hosted the Lady Bulldogs of Trinity. The Lady Wildcats came into Friday’s game sporting a 3-1 conference record and a 5-9 overall record. Trinity came in at 2-2 in conference play and 8-7 on the season.

Eastern Randolph won the tip-off and wasted no time scoring. Marion Goins took the ball all the way to hoop and laid one in to give the Wildcats 2-0 lead. Trinity tied the game moments later, but a free throw by Aniyah King put the Wildcats back in front. There would be two more ties before the Lady Wildcats took a 9-6 lead off a three from Goins. Trinity closed out the first quarter with a 4-0 run to lead 10-9.

The Lady Bulldogs pushed their lead to five with help of a three from Jade Earnhardt. Eastern Randolph did not panic and calmly cut the lead back to one with back to back buckets from Taylor Hatchett and King. Another three from Earnhardt extended the lead back out for the Bulldogs, but Goins drained one on the other end for the Wildcats to keep the Bulldogs close. Kayla Long cut to the basket on the Wildcats’ next possession and scored to give ER their first lead of the quarter. A bucket from Earnhardt gave the lead back to the Bulldogs momentarily. Tehya Jordan knocked down a deep two at the end of the quarter to give Eastern Randolph a 20-19 lead at halftime.

Eastern Randolph extended their lead at the start of the third quarter, but the Bulldogs matched them basket for basket. The Lady Wildcats took an eight-point lead off a three ball from Long early in the quarter. Trinity was not going to let this one slip away as they went on a 7-0 run to take a two-point lead over the Wildcats late in the quarter. Most of the Bulldogs’ points during the run came from the free throw line. Eastern Randolph got a bucket from Taelyn Johnson to tie the game at 34 all by the end of the quarter.

It was a tightly contested battle in the fourth quarter as the teams matched each other point for point. Trinity’s led 39-38 after a three from Earnhardt, but the Wildcats would pull out in front and never relinquish their lead. Eastern Randolph built a small lead and then held off a late run by the Bulldogs for a 50-47 win.

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Marion Goins with 13 points. Kayla Long finished with 11 points and Tehya Jordan chipped in 9. For the Bulldogs it was Bre Brown leading the way with 18 points. Jade Earnhardt notched 16 points and Lexi Hinson added 8.
