Lady Cats run rule Blue Comets

Cross-county rivals Eastern Randolph and Asheboro met on Thursday in a non-conference softball game at Eastern Randolph. The Lady Wildcats came into the game with a 10-4 overall record, while the Blue Comets came in at 8-9 on the season.

Asheboro’s Megan Banker got things started in the top of the first with a base hit to center field. ER’s Logan Castlebury caught a bunt from Emily Laclair for out number one and then made the play at first to get Banker’s courtesy runner out for out two. Catie Ficquette picked up a base hit, but Tori Maness would strikeout Adrianna Butler for out three. The Wildcats opened the bottom of the inning with back to back outs before Castlebury drew a walk. A single from Kaylee Carter gave the Wildcats another base runner as Maness stepped to the plate. Maness singles to score Castlebury and give Eastern Randolph a 1-0 lead. ER loaded the bases, but Brooklyn Rush was picked at first for out three.

Eastern Randolph opened the top of the second with an out against the Blue Comets before Brionna Hill doubled to left. A bunt from Saylor Wyand moved Hill into scoring position, but Wyand would be picked at first for out number two. Hill would score on a single from Emma Haywood to tie this one at 1 all. Maness would strikeout Ashley Allred for out number three. Nicole Cox got things done for the Wildcats in bottom of the second as she scored off a single from Haley Kearns. The run by Cox would be the only run of the inning as the Wildcats took a 2-1 lead.

The Blue Comets put two runners on base to start the third inning, but the Wildcats picked off the next three batters to end the inning. The Wildcats got the bats going in the bottom of the third as they brought in six runs. After an out by Carter, Maness singled and Shyanne Gay doubled to put runners in scoring position. A double from Rush scored Maness and Gay to put the Wildcats up 4-1. Rush, Kayla Long, Aniyah King, and Kearns would score the remaining runs for the Wildcats. After three complete innings, the Wildcats led 8-1.

Asheboro responded in the fourth inning with a run from Wyand off a hit from Banker. Banker’s courtesy runner would be picked off for out number three. Eastern Randolph continued where they left off in the bottom of the fourth as they brought in four more runs for a 12-2 lead over the Blue Comets. Gaye, Long, Cox, and King all scored for the Wildcats, while Goins and King picked up RBIs. After four innings, the Wildcats led 12-2.

The Wildcats made quick work of the Blue Comets in the top of the fifth to hold on for a 12-2 win.
