Lady Pats stumble against Storm

Providence Grove opened the final week of the regular season at home as the Lady Patriots faced off against the Southern Guilford Lady Storm. The Lady Patriots entered the game 11-10 on the season.

It was a low scoring first quarter as both teams played strong defense. Providence Grove picked up just one field goal in the quarter but knocked down two free throws for four points by the end of the first quarter. Southern Guilford went to Ariyah Wheless every time up the court as she scored all of the Lady Storm’s points in the quarter. After one quarter of play, Providence Grove trailed 7-4.

Malea Garrison got going in the second quarter as she led the Patriots to a one-point lead at halftime. She knocked down a couple of buckets early to pull the Patriots back into the game. Wheless continued to work her way through the PG defense for the Storm as she scored the bulk of the Storm’s second-quarter points. The teams traded buckets until the Storm led 15-14 with 2:38 left in the quarter. Garrison drained a three to put the Patriots on top 17-15 and Makayla McClain added a free throw to give the Patriots a three-point lead. Wheless knocked down a free throw and Kassidy Haith drained a three to put the Storm back in front. A deep two from Garrison gave the lead back to the Patriots but a pair of free throws from Wheless handed it right back to the Storm. Garrison closed out the quarter with a wide-open layup just before the buzzer to give the Patriots a 22-21 lead at the half.

Southern Guilford quickly took the lead to start the third quarter off a bucket from Destiny Newkirk and a free throw from Wheless. Garrison knocked down her third three of the game to give the Patriots a one-point lead. A three from Wheless put the Storm back on top and that is where they would stay. Wheless sliced and diced her way to the hoop on each and every trip up the floor to help the Storm built a lead. Providence Grove cut the lead to three on a bucket from Dark, but the Storm got a bucket and a three-point play from Wheless to extend the lead back to eight. Audry Mason scored her first field goal of the night followed by a deep three from Garrison to cut the lead to three once again for the Lady Patriots. Moments later, Providence Grove got the lead down to two on a floater from Garrison, but a bucket from Haith gave the Storm a 40-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Providence Grove cut the lead back to two at the start of the fourth quarter and then to one on a three from Garrison. Southern Guilford scored on a drive to push their lead to three before working the clock. Wheless scored once again to extend the Storm’s lead to five. The Storm held the Patriots to just two points during the final minutes of the quarter. After a free throw from Garrison, the Storm closed out the game with a 6-1 run. Providence Grove fell 52-43 to the Storm on Monday.

Leading the way for the Patriots was Malea Garrison with 25 points, while Madison Dark finished with 11. Audry Mason, Makayla McClain, and Edi Austin each chipped in 3. For the Storm, Ariyah Wheless led the way with 35.
