The winter sports season is off to a strong and entertaining start as teams and players opened the first full week of the season. Players put on quite a show this week as several games came down to the final few possessions. On athlete led his team to a 2-1 record on the season and incredible win over a cross-county rival. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Providence Grove’s Evan Taylor.

Taylor, a 6 foot 4 inch center for the Patriots, has been a key contributor the last few years and looks to continue that level of play throughout his senior season. As a junior, he averaged 12 points and 5 rebounds per game, while finishing in the top ten in the nation in charges drawn. He opened his senior season last week with a win over East Davidson and helped lead the Patriots to a 2-1 record this week. In a loss to Asheboro, Taylor notched 14 points. He sparked the Patriots to a win one night later as he finished with 18 points in a dominant win over Chatham Central. The Patriots closed out the week with a close 77-73 win over the Southwestern Randolph Cougars and it was Taylor who made several key plays down the stretch to keep the Patriots in control as the Cougars tried to mount a comeback. Taylor led the Patriots with 24 points in the win.

His senior season has gotten off to a hot start and if he can keep it up through the season then the Patriots are going to be a tough team to beat. Whether he scores or not, Taylor’s presence provides a spark for the Patriots when he is on the floor. He is a strong player on both sides of the ball and will be a key part of the Patriots run this season.

Congratulations to Evan Taylor on being named this week’ Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
