Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Fernando Castro

Stephanie King

Fall began to settle in this week as high school sports action continued. Teams have finally gotten in the groove of conference play and are looking to secure themselves a spot in the playoffs. One team took one step closer to that goal this week as one senior helped lead his team to back to back conference wins. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Southwestern Randolph’s, Fernando Castro.

Castro, a senior forward, led the Cougars to wins over Southeast Guilford and Southern Alamance this past week. In a 2-0 win over Southeast Guilford on Monday, he may not have scored, but he set up both goals on assists. Two nights later against Southern Alamance, he picked up one goal and three assists in a 4-1 win over the Patriots. Castro is one of those players who can score multiple goals a night, but he also knows that there is more he can do to help his team win. So far this season, he has scored 17 goals and dished out 15 assists for a total of 49 points in 13 games played. His season-high in goals came back in September when he scored three goals against Eastern Randolph. He also has a season-high of three assists in two games this season. Castro has been a key leader for the Cougars this season helping them to a 5-1 conference record and an 11-2-1 overall record.

In three seasons on varsity, Castro has scored 54 goals and dished out 32 assists for 140 career points in 49 games played. He has been named Player of the Game on seven times including three times this season. His strong play and leadership will be a crucial part of the Cougars down the stretch as they look to finish the regular season strong and gear up for post-season play.

Congratulations to Fernando Castro on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
