Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Gavin Rains

Stephanie King

With the regular season winding down teams are making one final push before postseason play begins. Players are stepping up and one player, in particular, had an outstanding week as he led his team to pair of key conference wins. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Wheatmore’s Gavin Rains.

Rains, a senior, has been a beast for the Warriors all season and he turned things up a notch this week. On Tuesday, he helped lead to the Warriors to a 77-64 win on the road at Providence Grove in a key PAC-7 matchup. Rains finished with 31 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, one steal, and one rebound. The Warriors closed out the week at home with a 68-44 win over Eastern Randolph behind 32 points, 16 rebounds, and two blocks from Rains. He is averaging a double-double on the season with 24.5 points and 16.4 rebounds per game. So far this season, he has 466 points, 312 rebounds, 60 blocks, 36 assists, and 26 steals.

Rains has scored in double figures in all but one game this season and he has been a big reason for the Warriors’ success. His best game of the season so far came in early January when he finished with 34 points, 21 rebounds, five blocks, three assists, and one steal in a loss against High Point Central. If Rains continues to play the way he has the last few games, then the Warriors should finish the season strong and put themselves in a great spot heading into the postseason.

Congratulations to Gavin Rains on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
