Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Gavin Rains

Winter sports officially came to an end this week as the final Randolph County team fell in the state basketball tournament. With just a handful of games this week, choosing the Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” was easy. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Wheatmore’s Gavin Rains.

Rains, a junior, has been a dominate force for the Warriors all season long and led them into the state playoffs. He scored in double figures in pretty much every game this season and had several outings with 20 or more points. Before the playoffs began, he was averaging 23 points and 15 rebounds. He led the Warriors to a 23-6 finish on the season.

This past week he tallied 42 points in the Warriors two state tournament games. On Tuesday against Thomasville Rains poured in 23 points and helped Wheatmore narrowly defeat the Bulldogs. Two nights later he finished with 19 points as the Warriors saw their season come to an end against Mountain Heritage. Rains improved greatly from last season and should be threat for the Warriors next season.

Congratulations to Gavin Rains on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week”!
