Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Kelsey Craven

Kaitlyn Mullins

In a week that saw three, Randolph County teams reach the state finals it was difficult to pick just one athlete for this week’s athlete of the week. However, after pouring over box scores, one player stood out above the rest. This player stepped up when her team needed it the most and it paid off with a trip to the state championship series. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Eastern Randolph’s, Kelsey Craven.

Craven, a junior, has had a solid season for the Lady Wildcats as they have pushed their way into the state finals. This past week she had possibly her two best games of the season in the Lady Cats’ East Regional Finals against South Granville. After stumbling in game one of the best of three series, the Lady Cats got the bats going in game two to edge out the Vikings 9-8. Craven was a key part of the win finishing with three hits in four at-bats including a home run and a double, two runs scored, and two RBIs. The home run by Craven came in the bottom of the first inning and gave the Wildcats early momentum. One night later, she took things up a notch in the Wildcats’ 5-1 win over the Vikings in game three. She went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored and four RBIs. Two of her three hits were home runs that allowed the Wildcats to control the game.

She has stepped up with each passing game and the Lady Cats will need her to have another couple big games as they vie for a state championship next weekend. Craven gives it her all whenever she steps on the field and that will be no different when she steps onto the field in the state finals.

Congratulations to Kelsey Craven on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
