Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Kelsey Craven

Stephanie King

With only a few teams left in the state playoffs, players worked extremely hard to help their teams advance this past week. By the end of the week only one team from Randolph County was left standing. The Eastern Randolph Wildcats have been dominating their competition all season and have found themselves in the Final Four of the 2A state softball tournament. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Eastern Randolph’s Kelsey Craven.

Craven, a freshman, came up big for the Lady Wildcats this past week during state tournament play. While she did not start on Tuesday in the Wildcats third round game, she made the most crucial play of the night. Craven came off the bench as a substitute base runner and in the bottom of the seventh she used smart base running to score the winning run. She scored the winning run on a wild pitch. A few days later in the Wildcats fourth round game against the Jordan-Matthews Jets, she went 3-for-5 at the plate and brought in three runs. The Wildcats won the game 12-4.

This season, Craven has played in 20 games and has a batting average of .467. She has gone 21-for-45 at the plate this season with 18 runs and 15 RBIs. As just a freshman, Craven has been an important member of the Lady Cats this season and will only get better as her high school career progresses.

Congratulations to Kelsey Craven on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week”!
