With conference tournaments and state playoffs looming, teams are scrambling to pick up a few more wins to improve their seeding in the tournament. One team closed out their regular season with three straight wins that should help win the state tournament seeding process begins. All three wins were a team effort, but one player produced consistently all week. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Trinity’s Nyah Powers.

Powers is a junior middle hitter and middle block for the Bulldogs. This is her third season as a member of the varsity volleyball program and she was has improved each year. This past week she helped lead her team to victories over High Point Andrews, Ragsdale, and Eastern Randolph. In the win over High Point Andrews on Tuesday, Powers finished with 8 kills, 2 aces, 1 block, and 5 service points. One night later in a win over Ragsdale she recorded 6 kills, 2 aces, 4 blocks, 2 assists, and 7 service points. The Bulldogs closed out their regular season with a win over Eastern Randolph and Powers had her best game of the week. She played in all five sets and finished with a stat line of 4 kills, 9 aces, 5 blocks, 7 digs, and 22 service points.

She has been a consistent contributor for the Bulldogs all season and they will need her during the conference and state tournaments. On the season she has 115 kills, 83 solo blocks, 55 aces, 54 digs, and 146 service points. What her stats don’t show is the heart and effort that she brings to each game. She gets her teammates fired up and she’s the first one to dive on the floor to try and save the ball. She is a key asset for the Bulldogs.

Congratulations to Trinity’s Nyah Powers on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week”!
