Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” Rachel Luna

With the postseason arriving this week players will have to step up in order for their team to have a long run. This week one player stepped up and did a lot of the little things in order for her team to take home the conference tournament title. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Asheboro’s, Rachel Luna.

Luna, a senior guard, has a been a leader on the court for the Blue Comets all season and it is only natural that she would play a key role in their postseason run. On Tuesday in the Blue Comets’ open round conference tournament game, she did not lead the team in scoring but she did make several key plays that helped them edge out their opponent. She finished with 6 points in the win over Southern Guilford while also picking up 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Two nights later, she notched 17 points to lead the Comets to win over Southern Alamance. She knocked down several threes in the first half to give the Comets a lead that they would never relinquish. On Friday, Luna helped the Comets capture the Mid-Piedmont Conference girls’ basketball tournament title with 13 points in a win over Eastern Guilford.

One thing the box score does not show about Luna is her willingness to make the hustle plays that lead her team to victory. She is not afraid to dive on the floor to go after a loose ball to help her team. Her grit and toughness have played a key role in the Blue Comets’ success this season and they will need it to continue as they move to the state playoffs.

Congratulations to Rachel Luna on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week!”
