It was a crazy Friday night as the high school football season got underway. Several games in the county were impacted by rain and lightning, but a few games did finish once the storms had passed. One game that did finish was Randleman vs Asheboro. This one was an intense game that saw two ties and six lead changes. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week” is Randleman’s Tanner McGee.

McGee, a 6’4” senior quarterback, led his team to a 37-34 victory over the Asheboro Blue Comets on Friday night. This is McGee’s third year as a varsity starter, so he has the experience to lead this team. On Friday, he completed 13 of 29 passes for 260 passing yards and one passing touchdown. McGee is a dual threat quarterback and he showed it on Friday as he added 16 carries for 99 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown to his stat line. He was key on the Tigers final drive of the game as he found Jaquan Snipes for the touchdown. McGee then converted the two-point conversion to give the win to the Tigers. Based on his performance on Friday, opposing teams better watch out for this quarterback.

McGee has been known to make big plays before. Last season, he found Tyson Green in the end zone on a hail mary to beat High Point Christian Academy. Speaking of last season, McGee averaged 137.6 passing yards per game and completed 108 of 207 passes for a total of 1,651 passing yards. He passed for 17 touchdowns last season and rushed for 8. So far in his career, he has completed 131 of 249 passes for 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns. He has rushed for 523 yards on 112 carries and 10 touchdowns.

The Tigers are in good hands as long as McGee plays this way the rest of the season. Based off the Tigers performance on Friday, the PAC-7 conference just got a whole lot tougher. Congratulations to Randleman’s Tanner McGee on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week”!
