Stephanie King

The 2019 NCHSAA state track meet took place on Friday and two Randolph County athletes had strong showings. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are Eastern Randolph’s Amya Brooks and Randleman’s Clayton Gentry.

Brooks, a sophomore, participated in the three events in Friday’s state meet and finished in the top eight in all three including two top-three finishes. In her first event of the afternoon, the high jump, she finished third with a jump of 5-02.00. She took home eighth in the long jump with a jump of 16-9.50. Her best event of the afternoon was the triple jump where she placed second with a jump of 37-08.50. Brooks will be a bright spot for the Wildcats’ track team next season and after her hard work this season she has what it takes to earn a state championship next year.

Congratulations to Amya Brooks on being named one of this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week!”

Gentry, a senior, had a strong showing in his final state track meet by placing in the top four in two of his three events. He raced his way to a fourth place finish in the boys’ 2A 200-meter dash with a time of 22.51. His strongest event of the afternoon was the long jump where he placed second with a jump of 22-11.00. Gentry has had a strong season for the Tigers of Randleman and represented them well as the only state qualifier of the season. His athleticism and leadership will be missed next year.

Congratulations to Clayton Gentry on being named on of this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week!”
