With another week of high school athletics in the book, it is time for this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athlete of the Week”! Several athletes put on spectacular performances this week and a couple even accomplished some incredible feats. However, two athletes put in consistent performances all week and helped their team keep its undefeated season alive. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are Providence Grove’s Anna Thomas and Emma Saunders.

Senior volleyball team captains, Thomas and Saunders, have helped the Patriots to a 5-0 start on the season and a 2-0 start in conference play. The two are four-year members of the Providence Grove volleyball program and have been part of some exciting seasons. Individually, both girls give their all and produce on a consistent basis for the Patriots.

Thomas, a two-year member of the varsity program, is the setter for the Patriots and has dished out several hundred assists in her career. This past week she dished out 106 assists in Providence Grove’s three wins. In Monday’s win over Southern Guilford she had a stat line of 30 assists, 4 digs, 1 ace, 4 serving points, and 3 kills. One night later she finished with 42 assists, 6 digs, 4 aces, 16 serving points, and 2 kills in the Patriots first conference win of the season over the Eastern Randolph Wildcats. In the closing game of the week against Randleman, Thomas dished out 34 assists, 12 digs, 2 aces, and 10 serving points. So far, she has accumulated 178 assists, 12 kills, and 30 digs on the season.

Saunders, a three-year member of the varsity program, is an outside hitter for the Patriots and she knows how to lay down a kill with authority. She sent 35 kills over the net in the Patriots three wins this week. On Monday she recorded 5 kills, 1 ace, 1 serving point, and 8 digs in the win over Southern Guilford. She stepped things up one night later against Eastern Randolph when she went for 18 kills, 1 ace, 8 serving points, and 16 digs. In the final game of the week against Randleman, Saunders finished with 12 kills, 7 serving points, and 14 digs. On the season, she has a total of 75 kills and 70 digs with a hitting percentage of .326.

Providence Grove is in very good handles with Thomas and Saunders leading the charge. The Patriots look like a very dominate team and opponents better watch out. Congratulations to Anna Thomas and Emma Saunders on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week”!
