Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” Asheboro Blue Comets

Stephanie King

Midseason tournaments are a great way for teams to test themselves against possible postseason opponents. One Randolph County team passed the test this week as they picked up three wins in three days to win the Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are the Asheboro Blue Comets.

Asheboro entered the tournament 5-2 on the season before taking down three tough opponents to win the Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational. On Thursday the Blue Comets posted a 71-45 win over the Jordan-Matthews Jets to open the Tournament. After a back and forth start, the Comets pulled away in the second quarter for the win. On Friday, Asheboro faced off against a talented Trinity team and picked up a 70-55 win to advance to the finals. The Comets would battle it out with the Wheatmore Warriors in the championship game on Saturday and held off a late push by the Warriors to win.

The Comets banded together over the course of the tournament and put together an incredible run. The momentum from this win is sure to help the Comets jump start the second half of the season. If they play the way they did this past week, then they will be a force in conference play and earn themselves a spot in the state playoffs.

Congratulations to the Asheboro Blue Comets on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week!”
