Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” Diamond McDowell and Kaylee Bowman

It was another great week of Randolph County sports as athletes from across the county brought their A-game. Whether it was making the little plays or shining bright in their team’s win, Randolph County athletes put on quite a show this week and stepped up when their teams needed it. The level of play this week was so high that there could not just be one athlete of the week. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are Asheboro’s Diamond McDowell and Providence Grove’s Kaylee Bowman.

McDowell, a junior middle hitter/blocker for the Comets, has had an impressive season right from the very beginning. She has been a dominant force on the front line for the Comets and is very skillful at picking up points when her team needs them most. She can send the ball over the net so quick and powerful that the other team does not have time to react. The past few weeks, McDowell has been on fire and has continued to light up the floor for the Comets this week as well. She led the Comets to a 3-0 finish on the week with wins over Randleman, Trinity, and conference foe Southeast Guilford. In the win over Randleman, she finished with 17 kills and two blocks before picking up 14 kills and four blocks over the Bulldogs. In the final game of the week, McDowell went for 18 kills and two blocks in a win over Southeast Guilford. She has been putting numbers like this up for most of the season and if she continues then the Comets could be setting themselves up for a strong run in the postseason.

Bowman, a senior setter for the Patriots, as one of four captains has been a leader on the floor all season. Her strengths are digging the ball and assisting, but she has been known to do a little bit of everything on the volleyball court. This past week she helped the Patriots to a pair of PAC-7 Conference wins over Jordan-Matthews and Eastern Randolph. On Tuesday against the Jets, Bowman finished with 15 assists, nine digs, six aces, 10 service points, and two kills. She stepped up her play on Thursday as the Patriots picked up a 3-2 win after a tough battle with the Wildcats of Eastern Randolph. She matched her season-high of 38 assists to go along with 17 digs, 18 service points, five aces, and five kills. So far this season, Bowman has amassed 384 assists, 242 digs, 206 service points, 72 aces, and 52 kills in 59 sets played. She has had a solid career for the Patriots and is only 20 assists away from reaching the 1,000 assists mark for her career. She has been named Providence Grove’s player of the match seven times this season. She will be a key contributor as the Patriots look to finish the season strong and make a run in the postseason.

Congratulations to Diamond McDowell and Kaylee Bowman on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week!”
