Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” Ethan Oakley, Hayden Waddell, Michael Smith, & Isaiah Martin

High school athletes work all season with one goal in mind and that is to make it to states. If they reach states then that goal becomes winning a state championship. Randolph County sent four wrestlers to title matches on Saturday and all four accomplished their goal of winning a state title. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are Ethan Oakley, Hayden Waddell, Michael Smith, and Isaiah Martin.

All four wrestlers entered the state championship as top seeds in their respective weight classes and battled their way into the finals. Oakley and Smith kickstarted their finals runs on Thursday in the first round before advancing to Friday’s quarterfinals and semifinals. Waddell and Martin’s tournament kicked off on Friday with quarterfinals action.

Oakley won by fall in round one on Thursday before winning y major decision in the quarterfinals. He would win by a 7-1 decision in the semifinals to advance to his third straight title match. Oakley won the state title as a freshman and reclaimed his crown on Saturday after falling in last year’s finals. He finishes the season 53-1 and is now a two-time state champion.

Smith won by fall in his first two rounds of action before winning in a tiebreaker round in the semifinals. He came in looking to defend his title from last season and did so with a sudden overtime win in the finals. Smith finishes the season 47-2 becoming a two-time state champion for the Asheboro Blue Comets.

Waddell entered the tournament undefeated on the season and as a two-time state champion. He pinned his quarterfinal opponent before winning by tech fall in the semifinals. Waddell became a three-time state champion after pinning his finals opponent in three and a half minutes. He finishes the season a perfect 59-0.

Martin also entered the tournament undefeated on the season and was in search of his first state title. He made quick work of his opponents in dominating fashion to win his first state title. Martin pinned each of his opponents in one minute or less including pinning his finals opponent in forty-six seconds. He finishes the season 57-0.

Congratulations to all four wrestlers on outstanding seasons, state titles, and being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week!”
