Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” Michael Smith & Hayden Waddell

After three days of wrestling, champions were finally crowned at the Greensboro Coliseum and two of them were from Randolph County. Asheboro’s Michael Smith and Uwharrie Charter’s Hayden Waddell each picked up state titles and they are this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week”!

Smith, a junior, earned his first state title in the 220-weight class on Saturday night. He was the number one seed coming out of the 3A Midwest Regionals with a 44-1 record on the season. He defeated Michael Rogers in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday before taking down Chris Matthews in the quarterfinals on Friday. He faced off against Ray Dixon in the semifinals on Friday and picked up the win by a 4-2 decision to advance to the title match. It was a hard-fought battle in the title match, but Smith pulled out a 10-5 decision for the title. He finishes the season at 48-1.

Waddell, a junior, earned his second straight state wrestling title on Saturday in the 1A classification. He won the state title in the 106-weight class last season and this earn went up a weight class to claim the title in the 113-weight class. He was the number one seed coming out the 1A East Regionals with a 41-3 record on the season. His run in the state tournament started on Friday when he defeated Brenton Lawing in the quarterfinals before taking down Evan Wagoner in the semifinals with a 16-0 tech fall. He took on Matt Lovin in the title match and picked up a pin for the win.

Congratulations to Michael and Hayden on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week”! We would also like to congratulate all the Randolph County wrestlers who qualified for the state tournament.
