Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” NERMS Huskies & SAMS Comets

This week was all about middle school basketball as teams participated in the 39th annual middle school basketball tournament. Two teams battled their way through the tournament field to claim titles and finish the season on a high note. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are the NERMS Lady Huskies and the SAMS Comets.

The NERMS Lady Huskies entered the tournament as the number two seed at 12-2 on the season. They put in a dominating performance against SAMS in the first round before taking down Uwharrie Ridge in the semifinals. The semifinal win set up a meeting with the top-seeded and undefeated RMS Lady Tigers. NERMS took control of the championship game early, but the Tigers hung around. The Lady Huskies banded together to top the Tigers 37-36 in overtime. NERMS made their free throws when it counted and those were the difference in the Huskies winning their second straight middle school girls basketball tournament title.

The SAMS Comets came into the boy’s middle school basketball tournament as the number one seed with a 12-2 overall record. They cruised their way through the first round with a win over Uwharrie Ridge before defeating a tough SERMS team in the semifinals. The Comets met the NERMS Huskies in the championship game and cruised their way to victory once again. After a back and forth first quarter, SAMS took control in the second quarter and never looked back. It was a true team effort as the Comets defeated NERMS 56-29 to capture the 2018-2019 middle school boys basketball tournament championship.
