Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” Southwestern Randolph Lady Cougars

Stephanie King

Mid-season tournaments are a great way for teams to gauge how well they can handle playing with a short turn around time and it gives them an opportunity a chance to face teams they could very well see in the state playoffs. One team had no problem playing three games in three days and pulling off a tournament title in the process. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are the Southwestern Randolph Lady Cougars Varsity Basketball team.

Southwestern Randolph entered the week a perfect 7-0 on the season. The Lady Cougars opened the week with a 67-36 win over South Davidson before gearing up to make a run in the 28th annual Courier-Tribune Christmas Invitational. On day one of the tournament, Southwestern Randolph posted a 73-49 win over Jordan-Matthews to set up a date with the Randleman Tigers in the semifinals. The Cougars had no problem defeating the Tigers 55-25 on Friday to advance to the championship game. On Saturday, the Cougars held off a tough Providence Grove team for a 63-35 win to earn their second straight tournament title.

The Cougars got contributions from multiple players throughout the week and displayed some incredible team work on their way to the title. Southwestern Randolph has shown that they have what it takes to be a tough opponent and should have a strong conference run. The teamwork displayed by the Cougars is the key to their early season success and if they can keep it up they should have no problem making a deep run in the playoffs.

Congratulations to Southwestern Randolph Lady Cougars on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week!”
