Even though schools kicked off their winter break this week, that did not stop county basketball teams from taking the court at Asheboro High School for the 27th annual Courier Tribune Christmas Invitational. After three days of some close game and some blows, a winner was crowned on Saturday and the winning team is this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week”! This week’s athletes of the week are the Southwestern Randolph Cougars.

Southwestern Randolph dominated their way through the 2017 Courier Tribune Christmas Invitational to take home the hardware. In the opening round, the Cougars posted a 48-36 win over the Jordan-Matthews Jets. This one was a close one early on, but the Lady Cougars used a third quarter run to take full control of the game. On day two of the tournament, the Lady Cougars faced off against the Eastern Randolph Lady Wildcats in the second semifinal of the night. It was a complete team effort as the Cougars took down the Wildcats 71-30. Southwestern Randolph pounced on the Wildcats early and never let them get close.

In the championship game on Saturday, the Cougars had to fight off a tough Asheboro team for the title. The two teams were tied at 16 all at the end of the first quarter before the Cougars took a 27-20 lead at the half. The Lady Cougars led by eleven heading into the fourth quarter and a 10-0 run at the start of the quarter put the game away. The Cougars’ play this week should get Southwestern Randolph’s fans excited for the rest of the season.

Congratulations to the Southwestern Randolph Lady Cougars on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week”!
