With playoffs in full swing this week, players had to step up and help lead their teams to victory. One team battled their way to three wins in three days to win their playoff tournament for the first time. This week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week” are the SWRMS Cougars baseball team.

The Cougars finished the regular season with a 13-1 record and headed into the inaugural middle school baseball tournament as the number one seed. In the first round of the tournament, SWRMS defeated the NAMS Comets 17-1 in two and half innings of play. Landon Williamson, Tyler Parks, and Blake Marsh each had strong showings at the plate in game one. Williamson tripled, while Marsh picked up a solo home run. Parks cleared the bases with a four-run homer in the bottom of the second.

In the semifinals, the Cougars had to fight off a pesky ATMS team for a 19-10 win to advance to the title game. All the Cougars stepped up in the semifinals and helped their team to the win. Easton Clapp, Ethan Gravely, and Troy Fogleman put the ball in play for the Cougars throughout the game and picked up key RBIs.

SWRMS had to stay together in the championship game against the NERMS Huskies on Friday afternoon as they picked up a 4-1 win. After the Huskies took a 1-0 lead, Trip Mabe was key as he laid down a perfect bunt to score the tying run. Gravely made a key hit in the bottom of the sixth to put separation between the Cougars and the Huskies as he scored two runs. Marsh secured the win from the mound as he struck out 12 batters, including the three straight batters in the top of the seventh.

Congratulations to the SWRMS Cougars on winning the inaugural middle school baseball tournament and on being named this week’s Mid-State Toyota “Athletes of the Week”!
