NERMS tops RMS 7-2

It was a perfect afternoon for softball as the RMS Tigers hosted the NERMS Huskies on Thursday.

Leading off for the Huskies was Edi Austin as she got on base with a hit. Morgan Gruer was able to lay down a RBI bunt as she sent Austin home. Makayla McClain picked up a base hit to move the runner on base. RMS turned a double play picking off the lead runner for outs one and two. Reann Saunders slammed an RBI single as she scored McClain to put the Huskies up 2-0. The Tigers finished the top of the first with a ground out. NERMS forced the Tigers into a quick one, two, three inning in the bottom of the first. After the first inning NERMS lead 2-0. RMS started the top of the second strong as they got back to back outs. Katie Jo Staley picked up a base hit, but was left stranded as the Tigers got the third out of the inning. Jesselyn Perez began the bottom of the second with a base hit. Mackenzie Roach followed Perez with a a RBI single that scored Perez to cut the lead to one. NERMS finished the bottom of the second with three outs in a row. After two innings, NERMS led 2-1.

Once again in the top of the third the Tigers started with two outs right away. Shea Leonard reached on a single, but was left on base as the Tigers got the third out of the inning. NERMS started the bottom of the third with two outs, but then gave Savannah Scott a double to give the Tigers a base runner. Scott was left on base as the Huskies finished the inning with three outs. In the top of the fourth, the Tigers gained their first out on a pop up. Emaa Mazzarae picked up a double for the Huskies. Finishing out the top of the fourth were the Tigers as they got back to back strikeouts. Perez started the Tigers out strong as she hit a triple in the bottom of the fourth. Perez made her way around the bases and was able to steal home for the Tigers as she tied the game at two apiece. Roach reached first base as she was walked. NERMS finished the bottom of the fourth with three outs in a row. At the end of the fourth inning the game was tied 2-2.

Austin tripled in the top of the fifth to give the Huskies a runner in scoring position. RMS answered with the first out of the inning. Austin used smart base running as she stole home to give the lead back to the Huskies. With two outs, Leonard hit a double followed by Saunders who gained a base hit. RMS got the third out of the inning leaving two runners stranded for the Huskies. NERMS forced the Tigers into another three up, three down inning. RMS returned the favor in the top of the sixth as they forced the Huskies into a quick one, two, three inning. Once again the Huskies forced the Tigers to go three up, three down in the bottom in the sixth. At the end of the sixth inning NERMS was up 3-2.

Austin started the top of the seventh with another base hit. Gruer drew a walk putting Austin into scoring position. McClain stepped to the plate and hit a two run RBI single to put the Huskies up 5-2. The Tigers got their first out of the inning, but then gave up a RBI double to Saunders. The double by Saunders scored McClain giving the Huskies a 6-2 lead. With two outs Allie Frazier used smart base running as she stepped across home plate making it a 7-2 game for the Huskies. RMS finished the bottom of the seventh with a ground out. NERMS finished the game by making the Tigers go one, two, three in the bottom of the inning. The Huskies topped RMS 7-2.
