Patriots off to Round 2

The Providence Grove Lady Patriots opened their post season on Wednesday night as they hosted the North Brunswick Scorpions in the first round of the 2A states softball playoffs.

In the first inning both teams held each other scoreless and pick up the three outs they needed. Providence Grove once again held the Scorpions in the top of the second. In the bottom of the second, the Patriots put runners in scoring position, but could not bring them across the plate. With two outs Kelsey Williams found herself on base with a base hit. A double from Tatum Smith put Williams in scoring position and gave the Patriots another base runner. Alli Young drew a walk that loaded the base, but all three runners were left stranded.

In the top of the third, the Patriots forced the Scorpions into a quick one, two, three inning. Anna Thomas started the bottom of the third with a base hit for the Patriots. Emma Saunders drew a walk as Sam Welch stepped to the plate. Welch laid down a bunt that sent Thomas’ courtesy runner, MaKenna Sibbett, in for the score. Logan Cockman singled to score Kerryn Clark and give the Patriots a 2-0 lead. With no outs in the inning, the Scorpions gave up a two run double to Williams making this a 4-0 game. North Brunswick rallied as a team to get three straight outs to end the inning.

Providence Grove forced two quick outs in the top of the fourth, but gave up a base hit to Jessica Williams. She would be left stranded as the Patriots picked up the final out of the inning. North Brunswick forced the Patriots to go three up, three down in the bottom of the fourth. Katelyn Thigpin started off with a base hit in the top of the fifth for the Scorpions. Providence Grove picked off Thigpin as Kerrin Mailhot picked up a base hit. Alisa Maldanado drew a walk, but was left stranded as the Patriots ended the inning with a strikeout. Providence Grove was once again forced to go three up, three down in the bottom of the fifth.

North Brunswick put two runners on base to start the top of the sixth and a single from Williams score the first run for the Scorpions. Providence Grove got three straight outs to end the inning. Peyton Grettler started the bottom of the sixth with a walk to put a runner on base for the Patriots. She would be left stranded as the Scorpions picked up three straight outs. In the top of the seventh, Hailey Carlyle and Malanado got back to back base hits for North Brunswick. Providence Grove forced three straight outs to end the game. The Patriots get the win 4-1 to move on to round 2 of the state playoffs.
