PG routs Knightdale in Copperhead Classic

The Providence Grove Patriots faced off against the Knightdale Knights on Tuesday as part of the 2019 Copperhead Classic at McCrary Park. Providence Grove entered the game 11-7 overall on the season.

Providence Grove gave up three hits and one run in the top of the first inning before unleashing a flurry of runs on the Knights in the bottom of the inning. Jackson Jones led off the bottom of the inning with a deep double to left. The Knights picked up their first out of the inning but followed it by giving up a walk to Drew Needham. With runners on first and second, Zander Smith singled to score both runners and give the Patriots a 2-1 lead. Jordan Hodges and Levi Adams both drew walks to load the bases as Luke Thomas stepped to the plate. Thomas had his hit caught for out number two, but Smith was able to score an give the Patriots a 3-1 lead.

Hodges scored from second on a single from Griffen Payne before a single from Parker Robb scored Adams. Providence Grove made it back to the top of their batting order as Jones stepped to the plate for another double to score Payne and Robb. Dustin Stephens singled down the third base line to bring in Jones just before the Knights picked up the final out of the inning. After one complete inning, Providence Grove led 8-1.

Thomas took over the pitching duties for the Patriots in the second inning as they held the Knights scoreless. Providence Grove opened the inning with an out before giving up a walk and a single. The Patriots picked up out number two before a single loaded the bases for the Knights. All three runners would be left stranded as the Patriots made the play at first for the final out of the inning.  The Knights opened the bottom of the inning with an out before Hodges took a pitch to the back for a free base. Adams singled and Thomas drew a walk to load the bases for the Patriots.

The bases would not stay loaded long as Hodges scored on a wild pitch to put the Patriots in front 9-1.  Providence Grove drew three straight walks and runners would score on pitches that the catcher could not control on each walk. The Knights picked up out number two before Needham drew another walk. Robb and Jones scored off a pair of wild pitches to put the Patriots in control 14-1. After a walk from Smith, the Knights struck out Hodges for the final out of the inning. Providence Grove led 14-1 after two innings.

Providence Grove brought in Payne in the top of the third to replace Thomas on the mound and helped the Patriots hold the Knights scoreless for the second straight inning. The Patriots gave up a couple of hits, but would not let the Knights score. An early strikeout in the bottom of the inning put some pressure on the Patriots, but Thomas stepped to the plate for a double to alleviate some of that pressure. Payne singled to score Thomas and put the Patriots on top 15-1. The Knights picked up out number two but that did not stop the Patriots from putting this one away. Jones singled to score Payne’s courtesy runner, Travis Boone, to give the Patriots a 16-1 lead over the Knights. That run would end the game as the Patriots run-ruled Knightdale 16-1 in three innings.
