PG takes down Wheatmore

Tuesday night the Providence Grove Lady Patriots hosted the Wheatmore Lady Warriors in a PAC-7 varsity softball matchup.

Providence Grove started strong as they forced the Warriors into a quick three and out inning in the top of the first. Makenna led off the bottom of the inning with a double for the Patriots before Sam Welch drew a walk to add a second base runner. Tatum Smith brought in Edi Austin with an RBI double to give the Patriots a 1-0 lead. The bases were loaded moments later when Logan Cockman was hit by a pitch. With two outs, Makayla McClain made contact with the ball for an RBI triple to give the Patriots a 4-0 lead. Wheatmore ended the inning leaving one runner stranded.

The Patriots continued to play strong defense as they held the Warriors scoreless and forced them into another three up three down inning. Madison Taylor opened the bottom of the inning with a walk before a solo hit from Maddie Hunt put a runner in scoring position. The Warriors picked up the first out but followed by giving up a walk to Sibbett. Wheatmore got back to back outs to get out of the inning. After two complete, the Patriots led 4-0.

Victoria Blevins started the Warriors off in the top of the third with a solo hit. London Avant drew a walk before Kendall Lewis laid down the bunt to send Blevins home. With one out, Avant tagged up as she made thisto make it a 2-4 game. Abbey Parrish picked up an RBI double before Providence Grove got two outs to finish the top of the third as the Warriors made this a 3-4 game. Cockman opened the bottom of the third with an automatic walk after getting hit by a pitch. McClain sent the ball into the outfield for a double before Cockman tagged up to make it a 5-3 game. Hunt picked up an RBI single that sent McClain home and gave the Patriots a 6-3 lead. Alli Young took ball four for a walk as Sibbett gained another RBI double to send Hunt home. After three complete innings, Providence Grove led 7-3.

Kailey Wilbanks began the top of the fourth with a solo hit. Up to bat next was Kynnedy Thrift as also got a base hit. Blevins sent Wilbanks home as she sent the ball into the outfield for an RBI double. With no outs, Avant kept the bat going with an RBI base hit that made it a 5-7 game. The Patriots ended the inning with three straight outs. Leading things off in the bottom of the inning with a triple was Smith. With one out, Smith tagged up giving the Patriots an 8-5 lead. Up next was McClain as she sent the ball over the fence for a solo home run. Wheatmore ended the bottom of the fourth as Providence Grove led 9-5.

In the top of the fifth, the Patriots got two outs in a row before Wilbanks picked up a base hit. She would be left stranded as the Patriots picked up the final out of the inning. In the bottom of the fifth Young took ball four. Sibbett came up to bat for an RBI double that sent Young home. With one out, Austin tagged up to make it an 11-5 game. Wheatmore finished the inning with back to back outs. After five complete innings, the Patriots led 11-5.

Gaining back to back base hits in the top of the sixth were Blevins and Avant. The Patriots got the first out before Blevins tagged up for a run. Skylar Swaney got on base with a hit and Emily Lane picked up an RBI single. Wheatmore made it a 7-11 game. Taking one for the team was Parrish as she was hit with a pitch. Providence Grove got their second out before giving up a run to Swaney. The Patriots finished the inning as Wheatmore came back to make it an 8-11 game. In the bottom of the sixth, the Warriors got the first out right away. Hunt made contact with the ball for a solo hit. Wheatmore left Hunt stranded as they finished the inning. After six innings, Providence Grove led 11-8.

In the top of the seventh, Thrift and Blevins both got back to back hits to start the inning. Providence Grove held both runners as they finished the game with three outs in a row. The Patriots took down the Warriors 11-8.
