PG’s undefeated season comes to an end

Tuesday night the Providence Grove Patriots hosted the Bartlett Yancey Buccaneers for the third round of the 2A state softball playoffs.

The Patriots began the top of the first with an out right away. Stepping to the plate was Rylie Webster as she picked up a base hit. Putting Webster on second was Hannah Thompson as she took ball four for a walk. Providence Grove finished with back to back outs. In the bottom of the first the Buccaneers forced the Patriots into a one, two, three inning.

Providence Grove returned the favor in the top of the second as they also had a three up, three down inning. Bartlett Yancey picked up a strikeout to start the bottom of the second. Ali Young led things off with a double. Behind her was Sam Welch as she took ball four for a walk. Tatum Smith made contact with the ball for a base hit. The Buccaneers were able to get the lead runner out at third for the second out of the inning. Bartlett Yancey left two runners stranded on base as they got the third out. After two complete innings the score remained 0-0.

The Patriots began strong in the top of the third as they gained back to back outs. Webster was able to gain her second base hit of the game for the Buccaneers. Providence Grove left Webster on base as they got the third out. Peyton Grettler was pitched ball four to start to bottom of the third. Gabri Hessenthaler was able to make contact as she picked up a base hit to put Grettler into scoring position. Maddy Hunt laid down a bunt as she was safe and the Buccaneers threw out the lead runner at third base. As Bartlett Yancey got the second out Hessenthaler tagged at home to put the Patriots on the board 1-0 off a hit from Anna Thomas. The Buccaneers finished the inning with a strikeout. After three complete innings the Patriots led 1-0.

Brittany Osborne got herself a base hit to start the top of the fourth. With one out Grace Watlington also got a base hit as she put Osborne into scoring position. Providence Grove was able to hold the runners as they got two outs in a row. The Buccaneers forced the Patriots into a one, two, three inning in the bottom of the fourth.

The Patriots were able to get the first out right away in the top of the fifth. Anna Coleman led things off with a solo hit and behind her was Webster as she too picked up another base hit. Stepping up to the plate was Thompson as she gained an RBI single that sent Coleman home to tie the game. Providence Grove got the second out with a fly ball into the end field as Webster tagged up to make it a 2-1 game. Providence Grove finished the inning leaving one runner on base. Bartlett Yancey had a quick three up three down inning in the bottom of the fifth. After five complete innings the Buccaneers led 2-1.

In the last two innings of the game both teams continued to have a one, two, three inning. Bartlett Yancey was able to hold the Patriots as they claimed a 2-1 victory to advance in the 2A state playoffs. Providence Grove ends the season 22-1.
